Pope Benedict, in his address to thousands of pilgrims at the Shrine of Fatima in Portugal, condemned gay marriage and abortion as an "insidious threat to society"

I love that guy, he's such a progressive and modern thinker. He's gonna go places!

Where does polygamous marriage between men and their church fit into his definition of family, I wonder? It's okay for men and women to opt out of traditional marriage in order to marry churches or some guy who's been dead for 2000 years, but society will fall apart when they marry other consenting, living people?

Well, sorta, but not literally. Technically he's only infallible when making an ex-cathedra pronouncement, which are extremely rare. Once a cetury rare. Otherwise, he's still allowed to be wrong occasionally. So, yeah, technically you can still question his judgment in any other matters.

Of course, he's still supposed to be a really smart and educated guy on catholic doctrine matters. So it doesn't necessarily mean you'll actually convince anyone that you know the catholic schtick better than the pope.

And I guess it depends on who you're questioning him to. If you're in a particularly devout community, well, you're not going to make yourself popular by bad-mouthing the Pope, that's for sure. But otherwise I guess your mileage may vary. Most catholic communities got out of the middle ages by now.

It also has to be a matter of faith, apparently. This is a rule I believe they added later on, after a few ex-cathedra "infallible" statements were wrong. You cant have the infallible guy being fallible, so you just change the rules a bit.

It doesn't need to be a leader that meets him. Have the Grand Poobah from a country or state that has legalized gay marriage stand up and say, "The Pope has made another condemnation of gay marriage, implying it is the downfall of civilization. Meanwhile, the forward thinking people of our great country have recognized the rights of all people to love and marry, and the success and strength of our wonderful nation shows how misguided the Pope is on this matter. We welcome the gifts that all couples bring to our society, and condemn those who espouse bigotry."

What's the Pope going to say? "Your country is evil not great"? Note also that it is carefully worded to condemn those who espouse bigotry, so if they claim it is an attack and condemnation of the Pope, then that is an admission that the Pope is a bigot. If they deny the Pope is a bigot, then the condemnation would not apply to him, right?
