Gay at TAM 9

But... the Silverado is the steakhouse, and it has it's own walls. The Catalina is in the middle of the game floor. Maybe they changed the name, but I may be wrong here.

There's the Silverado Lounge. That's where Drinking Skeptically (or was it Skeptics in the Pub?) was held last year, IIRC.

What he ^ said.

There's also a bar upstairs from that, next to Baja Miguel's restaurant, that's smaller, but much quieter.

Are you trying to segregate the gays from everyone else? What next, suggest they meet in a closet? :)

I know the bar of which you speak. It's where me, Hutch, Kittynh & Evelyn watched the World Cup final last year.

The "future expansion" area was just beyond the poker room. Last year I was told that it was opening just a few weeks after we were there. It includes more slots, tables, a larger poker room and a new lounge. The lounge area looked to be much larger than the existing lounges so we might want to consider that as the unofficial TAM hangout.

The Silverado lounge is in a high traffic area, perhaps they closed it in favor of the new lounge?

Awesome! :) I'm on the verge of registering for TAM9, and just spotted this thread. I'm totally game for meeting other LGBTIXYZ people at the conference. In fact, inspired by Randi's coming out last year, a conversation I had in NYC with DJ, my readings of Greta Christina's blog & her presence at this conference, and my recent discovery of Zinnia Jones' vlogs and blog, I now think it is imperative to meet up with other queer-folks in the intertwined skeptic & atheist communities. fatewilleatyou, I remember exchanging messages with you before TAM6.

Aw, this makes me really want to go. Blizzcon with 30 other geek LGBQTetc last year was such a blast. But I want to go on the cruise...

Well, wanted to say Hi to all - this will be my First TAM and as a gay Canadian, statistics instructor, I hope I can fit in some place. :crowded:

Also, I wanted to ask what is Vegas like for an openly gay couple, do we have to worry about public displays of affection towards each other? We have in the past experienced some bigotry in our travels.

Thanks for any advice.

Zebu - dumbasses are everywhere, and Vegas is no exception. That said, Vegas visitors are generally shellshocked by everything else going on, and it's hard to get their attention, even if you wanted to.

You know, given the trend toward "coming out" as an atheist (a strategy I am fully on board with), maybe someone with experience with the coming out movement (gay division) would consider presenting on the pitfalls/lessons learned etc. Too late for sunday paper session this year, I imagine.

But thats one that I would attend.

John Corvino gave a talk on a similar topic at Skepticon 3:

Gay or straight, please come and say hello to me at the Forum Welcome Table :)

I find as with coming out as gay coming out as an atheist, it is almost a never ending process and with both, people are always trying to put you back in the closet. With meeting new people, you always have to pick a time to tell them if they don't figure it out on their own.

I think the TAM group is very supportive. The bar next to the Mexican restaurant is very nice, but not very large.

Gay is great, atheist is fine, Canadian is pushing it but, eh...
but STATISTICS INSTRUCTOR?

I mean how tolerant do you expect people to be? Do you know many of us still have nightmares of our Statistics class? Frankly, you are lucky you even have a date to say nothing of a partner (seriously, does your partner know you teach STATISTICS?)

Well, that is why I usually say Research Methods, with a focus on Quantitative Methods. Coming out as a statistics instructor is usually the hardest closet I have to come out from. But, I blame your statistics instructor for your nightmares, stats are easy to do and did I mention FUN? Give me numbers to play with and I am a happy man.:D

Oh - and my partner is in fact aware of statistics lifestyle and supports it. :)

Has anyone set an official event for an LGBTQ meetup yet?

If not, does anyone have suggestions for good times / places?

I think the upstairs bar seems like a good idea.
