I couldn't tell what it was, knife or rod or stick, but I thought it odd that someone could do that to him with a knife, and he didn't scream. There was sound, and I kept listening, expecting an agonizing shriek, but I didn't really hear that.

My empathy makes me sympathetic for the human undergoing that, at that moment...but I do realize he wasn't a very nice man. To put it far too mildly. But that...that was just awful to see happening.

Personlly, while Bill Maher occasionally has something interesting to say about some topics, this comment really bothers me. To suggest that Islam & its treatment of sexuality is dysfunctional is an acceptable argument. But to suggest that someone sticking a knife in Gaddafi's backside was a sexual act, or was in some way an expression of repressed homosexuality is patently, ridiculous.

Is this one of those "rape is about power, not sex" things?

ETA: Because you can't really have 2+ generations of Western voices loudly insisting that (gay) anal intercourse is just as much a valid, healthy sexual activity as vaginal intercourse, and then complain when Westerners seriously consider that sticking things in backsides may in fact be a proxy for (gay) sex.

Well, I think Bill's comment falls flat on two levels.

1) Sticking a knife or a pipe into someone's rear end is hardly an act designed to provide sexual pleasuare for either partcipant. So to draw a conclusion about sexualization of the act on that basis seems rather disingenuous.

2) The argument that men raised in Islam may not 'get' women and therefore behave strangely is one that can be discussed. Suggesting however, that putting women in Burkhas turns people gay is a) ridiculous and b) runs against what we understand about why people happen to be gay.

It struck me that in Bill's role as a comedian as well as a political commentator, he thought that maybe his comment would get some yuks and cause people to look at Islam. Normally I'd be willing to give him an 'out' on this one. But since his whack-a-doodle stance on vaccinations, maybe he does indeed think that gay men are gay because they haven't yet met the right woman, or something equally hillbillyesque.

Well, if Obama, Bush, and Cheney had done the things that Gadaffi had done, I wouldn't in the least. However, since that doesn't apply, I would. No matter who it was.

I have no sympathy for anyone who kills and slaughters innocent people.
Not Gadaffi, not Saddam, not Hitler, none of them *******. Not one ounce.
