Future of the Forum

I third this notion. At the very least they could be archived in another site, off the actual forum, but still readable for those who want to.

I fourth this notion. The forum should essentially be copied and pasted in full (in terms of post content), in my view.

You know why kittening was stopped. It was stopped for a good reason.
If I recall correctly, the reason was it was uncivil behaviour, in that it was (usually) not attempting to address the thread topic. When it happened, it was often taken as a sign that the thread had run its course.

Here's a poll on that topic from 2011, with 144 responders (excluding the 'Planet X' option). Curiously, although 67% of those responders thought it was uncivi, 60% thought the mods shouldn't address it.

Oh- and assign everyone a new enrollment number, just to turn it into a race, even if post count is retained. (Though I , for one, would be content to see it reset. It can get embarrassing.)
I would be sad if the post count is reset. I use it to see who I am dealing with, because I treat rookies differently from old hands, especially concerning knowledge of skepticism. A question about test protocols is not the same if it is asked by someone with 50 posts, or someone with 5,000 posts.

I would also prefer it if they are able to keep the post count, but if that's not possible, it would be good if they can at least keep the original join date. That would at least show who has been here for a while, and may be more relevant.

Oh, really?

I look at the signing up date to see who I'm dealing with. Some of the woo nutters on these forums have a pretty high post count.

I concur.

A little tidbit on the whole joining date that may be of interest...

When the forums were first formed, the registrations were taken and if I remember correctly there was some kind of glitch after a few days, which meant that everyone had to re-register from scratch. I was away for a few days at the time of the glitch and remember being miffed that I had originally been one of the first 10 people to register (I think I was just lucky in that I had followed Randi's original form of blogging and was sitting at my computer when the forums first registrations became active) and on re-registration my registering position had moved to 60-odd.

Anyone else who has a registration date of Aug 2001 will probably have gone through the same procedure.

I've trashed my reputation here by being a willing contrarian, taking up the unwelcomed roles of Creationist, Christian Apologist, and even wearing the robes of NeoModernism. My post count is all I have left. If that goes away, I'll have to go back to being sane.

Depending on the database layout of the new software, it may be possible to migrate the joindate at the very least. It will probably take some finangling, but possible. It may also take runing it past a php script depending on wether or not the formats of the date is the same in both databases. EG. I use unix datestamp in my coding while some may use the more standard yyyy-mm-dd-hh-min-sec format.

The post count....Well, it should be possible. Here it depends on wether or not the new software supports it. THat being said, I haven't run into a forum software that doesn't support this feature.

I am talking as someone who HAVEN'T had a look at the potential new software though.

I think everyone with a join date of 2001 deserves to be a Prime (as in Transformer 2 when the old geezer says something along the lines of "Look, it's a Prime" when he first re-encounters Optimus).

Oh, and you're #114, by the way.
