US Air Force drops practice bomb

A US Air Force practice bomb has been dropped on the Yorkshire countryside.

A spokesman for the United States Air Force (USAF) said the training bomb landed in an area near Holme on Spalding Moor - six miles south west of Market Weighton in East Yorkshire.

More details
Should I feel paranoid? Is Yorkshire on Bush's Axis of Evil list? Are we next pre-emptive action? We've some oil, but not that much really...

You should be! Yours is the home of Geoff Boycott! The most evil man who ever played cricket!

I hope no black puddings were injured.

They're dropping practice bombs on Yorkshire. The real bombs are going to land on Lancashire.

(One of Bush's distantly-related ancestors was executed by the Lancastrians in the 15th Century. As his attitude to Saddam Hussein has shown, a Bush never forgets a slight.)

Spalding Moor's too posh for whippets... and (@ jon) the black puddings roam free on Saddleworth Moor.

It's all those far-fetched "Emmerdale Farm" storylines. Effluent like that qualifies as a WMD. Countless innocents, myself included, have been exposed to these odious agents while channelhopping, experiencing extreme symptoms such as nausea, diarrhoea and the sudden and complete loss of the will to live. As if that wasn't bad enough there's Richard Whitely and his punning against humanity on "Countdown". The US Airforce has intervened not a minute too soon.

It's the American reaction to the Yorkshire martial art of Ecky-Thump.

Except that Emmerdale is filmed near Harrogate, which is in North Yorkshire, and Countdown is (I'm guessing, as it's made by Yorkshire Television) filmed in Leeds in West Yorkshire. So the USAF is completely off, geography-wise :p

And in defence of Emmerdale, it's nowhere near as bad as that Irish soap—you know, the one about the three priests whose parish is on some remote island?—now that one is really far-fetched...

I dunno, I've met Catholic priests in real life. It seemed to be a pretty gritty, accurate portrayal.

1. FACT: There are alcoholic priests.

2: FACT: Catholic Bishops have maintained families in the US.

3. FACT: Aforementioned Bishop did indeed divert funds from charities to his secret family. I suppose this involved funds "resting in his account".

4. FACT: Catholic priests have indeed formed close bonds to the IRA.

5. FACT: Rural Ireland is a freaky place, and not just the offshore islands!

But are there non-alcoholic ones?

Strictly speaking, Bishops, Cardinals and the Pope are not required to be celibate, because they are not required to be priests. In fact, they all effectively are nowadays, but there's nothing in Doctrine that requires it. In the past Catholic Bishoprics were sometimes given to non-priests for political reasons.
