Friday the 13th

With a lot of skeptics just about everything they say.

Now do you have anything worthwhile to say? Unless you do I'll be ignoring you.
 
Personally, I don't care if you ignore me or not.

I was merely showing you that I think your position is logically inconsistent, and offering you the opportunity to show me where I was wrong. If you don't want to do that, I don't really care.

I don't think many rational people would disasgree that not all of your statements are logical. If you think they are, good for you.
 
I usually approach the Friday the 13th deal by asking people two things. How old they are, and then roughly calculating how many Friday the 13ths they have experianced(using 3/year as the average). I then ask what the worst 5 things that have happened to them were. Cross that with their memories of them occurring on a friday 13th. As added emphasis you can ask them about another combination, like Saturday the 14ths for instance. So far only one person still claims Friday 13th is unlucky for him: three of the top five of his list happened on a Fthe13th. Beyond that, most people seem to think it over and realize the point of my questions.
 
I have only been in one car accident in my life, and it happened on Friday, September 13th, 1996.

Just thought I'd mention that.
 
Sterolab. Can you name the day of week and date of other bad events in your life? Death of a loved one, unexpected tax bills, or other unpleasant news? And how many Friday the 13ths have you experienced? I've had bad 13ths and good ones. And I hope the accident was not a serious one...
 
I don't know who fist told me this, but I think it is the only immutable truth in the universe.

It's unlucky to be superstitious.

There is a difference between "irrational" and "impossible". To say that it is irrational to fear Friday the 13th is not to say that it is impossible for anything bad to happen on that date. And so with everything else: There are a lot of things that are extremely unlikely--and irrational--but not completely impossible. Certainly a thing may happen without implying any rational connection to a given other thing.

Do you mean to imply that you have some means of proving that things are rational? I'm sure I'd love to hear it.

WOW, you like to state the bleeding obvious don't you? If something is logically possible, then why persuppose it's non-existence without any evidence? That is the question here.

Well, yes. For example, my mother died Friday, June 25th, 1999. But I wasn't trying to convince anyone that there's something "to" Friday the 13ths. I have heard that there are more car accidents on Friday the 13ths and during full moons, but I am not sure if those statistics are accurate (and even if they are, there might be rational explanations)

My auto insurance company, which has incredible amounts of data at its disposal, covering practically every aspect of modern life, wanted to know what degrees I had and in what fields. If I'd been an engineer or a teacher, they'd have given me better rates. They have discounts for things I would never have thought of. They have no discount for drivers who stay home on Friday the 13th. And I've heard of studies which found that this particular date is no unluckier than any other.

Anyway, what is "logically possible" about "unlucky Friday the 13th?" Especially since the calendar is utterly arbitrary (slide a day from July to June and you change everything)--actually, just mentioning the calendar around here can--well, I guess you've seen it. What logical theory suggests that that particular day is different?

I'm kinda new here (I say "kinda" because I was on a year or so ago), so why don't you explain your rational logic to me in short, easy words? You must be using some, since you're not irrational. I cannot presently see the force of this logic, so you'll have to help me out.

My birthday periodically falls on friday the 13th. That, by itself, is sufficient reason it fear.
