Fred Phelps

From my perspective: Nearly indistinguishable from the cult of Al Gore.

The cult of Al Gore protests at the funerals of soldiers who have served in Iraq?

The cult of Al Gore refers to the Holocaust Museum in D.C. as the "Holocaust Memorial Sodomite Museum"?

The cult of Al Gore says things like "Jews stirred up the Romans to butcher 6 million Christians in the catacombs in the 1st century. The First Holocaust was a Jewish Holocaust against Christians. The latest Holocaust is by Topeka Jews against WBC ..."?

Everyone in the cult of Al Gore is related to him?

Radical differences between Al Gore and Fred Phelps. I can go to Al Gore and tell him I disagree with him and engage the man in a rational conversation. Fred Phelps, not so much.

No wonder I have this nitwit, Samm, on my ignore list. He's just a troll that should be ignored, and not responded to...totally.

You can't engage Fred Phelps in a rational conversation even if you don't verbally disagree with him. Believe me, I tried it once or twice.

My question to you all is what are your thoughts on Fred Phelps

A 4 letter word that starts with C and ends in T.

I dont think anyone with a heart and a braincell could look upon them positivley after seeing what him and the ******** that follow him did at Matthew Shepard's funeral

Hey! That kind of thing isn't appropriate here! You will not slander anyone labeled with a four letter word that starts with C and ends in T ever again! Got that? How dare you compare them to Fred!

The man has done much worse than that. After Al Gores old man died phelps went to the funeral and said "Al your dad is burning in hell!" Also going to the funerals of soldiers who died in in the war on terror, saying things like "thank God for dead soldiers" or "Thank good for 9/11." Rev Phelps makes Jerry Farwell look like a boy scout. I would love to see, though it would NEVER happen, a debate between Randi and this loon just for the fun of it. But I will say that Phelps did do one good thing in his life, he did fight for civil rights when he was a lawyer.

 He really is disgusting. Its one thing to disagree with what a person does, but to turn up at their funeral and hurl abuse at their grieving families is beyond sick.

Its hard to think clearly about them without sinking down to their level. Should they be fought with hate and violence,or just ignored and fought with love. Watching the Matthew Shepard story was one of the most heartbreaking things Ive ever seen, and if I were Matthews friend I would have wanted to kill him for the things he said, but his friends all dressed as angels, and formed a circle outside the church to keep those hatemongers away. He really should be stopped though, picketing funerals is very distasteful.

Hey all,

After watching a documentry from the BBC I am just baffeld by "Rev." Fred Phelps hipocracy, hatred, and down right stupidity. After looking into a man who's ast is nuttier than a fruit cake, I found seven things I just find odd:

1) He says that anyone in this "cursed nation", that being the US, will give of to sodomites. Fred Phelps has run for Governor of Kansas for the Democratic Ticket and many other offices

2) Fred Phelp's church, if you want to call it that, believes that all soldiers fight against God. Fred Phelps almost went to West Point Academy

3) He is shown to have a racist leaning but was a lawyer FOR the civil rights movement.

There are too many other weird things about this loon. People like Billy Graham, who do some good, are conciderd satan's followers by this guy. My question to you all is what are your thoughts on Fred Phelps and his cult the Westboro Baptist Church
This pathetic excuse tried to go to Britain so he could tell the Brits God hates them too but the Government wouldn't let him in.

As I understand it, there is a group of motorcycle enthusiasts (I'm not sure if they're Hell's Angels or not; I do believe they are all former or current military members) that make a point of going to the military funerals Phelps pickets and drown out his protests by revving their engines.

Not the most ideal way to disrupt the man, since the engines revving disturb the mourners as well, but at least it shuts Phelps up. And he can't protest it since they have the same right to be there to protest him as he does to spout off in public on his sick views.

Thank you; that's them.

I've been on a few Patriot Guard "missions" and the WBC was here in Houston to protest at the military funeral of a soldier killed in Iraq. Both of this kid's parents were Houston Police Officers and the WBC still showed up at the Baptist Church for the funeral.

I have to say that I'm fairly non-violent usually and an atheist, but rounding that corner on my bike and seeing this group of, literally, eight people including two young children, holding signs up that said "thank God for IEDs", "your pastor is a whore", "thank God for dead soldiers" and other crap was gut-wrenching. I could definitely have understood a loved one of the slain soldier mowing the group down. The shear gall!

Our group of about 200 lined up between the church and the WBC group with flags so that the mourners wouldn't be subjected to seeing the signs during the service. At least they didn't come to the cemetary.

The WBC was actually in town protesting Lakewood Church because Pastor Joel Osteen doesn't rail against homosexuals, when fate stepped in and allowed them to picket the military funeral while they were here.

This has always been my thoughts of the phelps.

They are the worst example of christian law ( lets be polite and say....) screwing, that is out there. They find out in what way the law will let them be pricks and then do it. This is despicable to me, and on a personal level, if i had to deal with them, i would take whatever legal repercussions arose from beating one of them. I am not a violent person but when people like this hide behind the law, well pardon my french but **** them.

A lot of people would say that this would jsut make them look persecuted , and maybe help them. But i honestly think that it would have the opposite effect. If i do it, and serve my three months or whatever ( not to mention get on the news , and maybe make a bit of coin with a few 15 minutes of fame tv spots. ) and someone at the next funeral does it, and at the next and the next, sooner or later they are going to either run out of people willing to take the chance of being beaten , or willing to let their kids see daddy get taken to the curb.

Its violent, it has nothing to do with logic or reason. But sometimes, one has to be willing to be the bad guy, to show certain people a lesson. Slippery slope, definitely , but there are some situations in which the law meant to protect people offers protection to people who want to cause harm. And taking a stand against these idiots , even at the cost of freedom, is fine with me.

That being said, i don't think they can get into canada. So i won't get the chance to put my money where my mouth is in my homeland.

Well, to be fair, I did hear Al say that exact thing, verbatim, at one of our weekly cult meetings, although I think he was being metaphorical.

The best suggestion I have ever seen for how to counter Phelps' insanity is this one:

I heard of a cool counter-protest once. Basically, you'd get people to pledge donations to a cause the Phelps were protesting (in this case, a local GLBT advocacy org). This pledge would work by the clock, meaning that individuals would pledge to donate a specific amount per hour the Phelps protest lasted.

The centerpiece of the counterprotest on site would be this huge counter thing showing the amount made so far, displayed so it would be easily readable by both the bigots and any cameras around.

I guess the rest of the counterprotest would just be people pointing and laughing.

Whatever you do, if you go there, have a good time and don't get angry. Do something fun or silly, preferably something you enjoy and they condemn. Wear mixed fiber drag, eat shellfish, have a beer. Arrange a gender-bender squaredance.
