Anti-Gay Church Protests at GI Funerals

SMYRNA, Tenn. (AP) - Members of a church say God is punishing American soldiers for defending a country that harbors gays, and they brought their anti-gay message to the funerals Saturday of two Tennessee soldiers killed in Iraq.

The church members were met with scorn from local residents. They chased the church members cars' down a highway, waving flags and screaming "God bless America."

"My husband is over there, so I'm here to show my support," 41-year-old Connie Ditmore said as she waved and American flag and as tears came to her eyes. "To do this at a funeral is disrespectful of a family, no matter what your beliefs are."

The Rev. Fred Phelps, founder of Westboro Baptist in Kansas, contends that American soldiers are being killed in Iraq as vengeance from God for protecting a country that harbors gays. The church, which is not affiliated with a larger denomination, is made up mostly of Phelps' children, grandchildren and in-laws.

The church members carried signs and shouted things such as "God hates fags" and "God hates you."
I'm content to respect most protests and cheer for free speech but damn if I didn't harbor a desire for that man to get a brain tumor.

Well, my hatred of Phelps goes back to his protest of Matthew Shepard's funeral, when I first heard of the SOB.

I don't hope he gets a brain tumor. A brain tumor might prevent him from realizing he's dying. I'm more in favor of lung cancer. Something that's really painful and leaves him completely and totally aware, up until the very end.

Did you know he used to be a prominent civil rights attorney?

Cool, I'll share your fantasy. However I have had two associates die of brain tumors and I can tell you it is not at all plesent. So I wouldn't lose any joy if the man did get a brain tumor.

That being said, it's difficult to imagine a more disgusting human being than Phelps.

The important thing being that he's removed from the gene pool permanently.

Well, there's the guy who came up with "Reality" television...

I don’t know, I kind of feel sorry for Phelps. Here is a guy who is brought up in a fundamentalist household, and has drilled into him the idea that his sexual identity is a mortal sin. Unable to cope with either the idea that he is gay or that there might be something wrong with this fundamentalist religion thing he is raised on, he retreats into rampant homophobia and bigotry. It’s a terrible tragedy that his parents weren’t more accepting.

Too late. He's already procreated.

Personally, I have a fantasy that when Fred Phelps dies, he comes face to face with The King of All Cosmos from Katamari Damacy. Imagine fundies coming face to face with this as their God:

I won't even get into how he talks. That'd be a shock and a half.

Even better though would be Jesus, The Ultimate Pacifist, actually showing up and punching Fred Phelps in the face. If I could pay God for that, I would.

I'll share your disdain for the man, but I gotta draw the line at wishing someone get cancer.

Speaking from experience, even the cancers we live through are extremely painful, frightening and the treatments are excruciating and horrific. I wouldn't wish any type of cancer on anyone. That's really a horrible thing.

Sorry to be a downer, but that's a bit too far over the line for me.

I know you were addressing Cleon and I don't mean to speak for him but for me, hey, that's cool. We all have different opinions of the propriety of such sentiment. I'm not proud of such strong feelings. This guy just really pisses me off. I'm a very forgiving guy but I can't bring myself to forgive him or even think in a neutral view of him.

I can certainly understand that. I hate the guy too.

Just riles me when people wish cancer on someone. I'm a bit hypocritical in that I have too, but going through it, I can't bring myself to do that ever again.

No offense, just rough for me to read.

I hear where you're coming from, I do. And I sincerely apologize if you're offended by my statement.

But this guy went to an innocent man's funeral--a man who was killed for being gay--and held picket signs "informing" his family that he was now being tortured in Hell.

This man--that's too generous by far--regularly goes to the funeral of AIDS victims with signs that say "Thank God for AIDS."

If anyone deserves an excrutiation, horrific death, it's Fred Phelps.

I'll agree he's a heartless bastard.

Let's focus on say...teamsters introducing him to Hoffa, deal?:D

A Milwaukee drill and his knees on a blind date?:D

One of my clients is the Ted Mann Family Resource Center which is a non-porift center for people with cancer. I think most of the people who work there would agree with you. I certainly understand. How are you doing BTW?

So far ok. Half a pound of titanium in my spine and 36 radiation sessions seemed to do the trick. No need for Chemo unless it progresses into Multiple Myeloma (50% chance in 10 years it will/won't)

Wanna see a cool CT scan? ;)

Sounds great! Let's all agree that should this guy pass away that none of the three of us will shed a tear.

CAn I get an AMEN?!:D

It's beneath us, as decent human beings, to wish cancer on Phelps. Remember, we're better than he is, and we should reflect our nobility of mind with higher sentiments.

I'm hoping Jesus will appear to Phelps, tell him the error of his ways, then rape him forty times.

Well I'm glad to hear things are good and wish you the best. If you need I have a whole list of things not to say to people with cancer. Let me know if you think they will help. Why is it BTW people say stupid things to people with cancer? Apparently this is a popular complaint from people who have been so diagnosed.
