Anti-Gay Church Protests at GI Funerals

SMYRNA, Tenn. (AP) - Members of a church say God is punishing American soldiers for defending a country that harbors gays, and they brought their anti-gay message to the funerals Saturday of two Tennessee soldiers killed in Iraq.

The church members were met with scorn from local residents. They chased the church members cars' down a highway, waving flags and screaming "God bless America."

"My husband is over there, so I'm here to show my support," 41-year-old Connie Ditmore said as she waved and American flag and as tears came to her eyes. "To do this at a funeral is disrespectful of a family, no matter what your beliefs are."

The Rev. Fred Phelps, founder of Westboro Baptist in Kansas, contends that American soldiers are being killed in Iraq as vengeance from God for protecting a country that harbors gays. The church, which is not affiliated with a larger denomination, is made up mostly of Phelps' children, grandchildren and in-laws.

The church members carried signs and shouted things such as "God hates fags" and "God hates you."

I'm content to respect most protests and cheer for free speech but damn if I didn't harbor a desire for that man to get a brain tumor.

Easy there. He does more for arguments against religion than 1000 Bertrand Russell's.

I guess in Canada they would shut him up. Sad.

I am and he will not. He will realize, however, on his death bed that if had only come out of the closet as a young man he could have lived on a beach at Mikonos for his life.

I agree with you Randfan. Free speech is a fundamental right of American citizens. Phelps is just showing people exactly what free speech is all about. Love him or loathe him at least he's out there and easily identified.

This wouldn't happen in Canada due to the 'hate speech' aspect of Canadian 'free speech'. I kinda like that clause (cannot promote hate against an identifiable group), but it is not part of the American rights.

I have many disagreements with the "gay" movement but this man is a complete idiot and is destroying the opportunity to have an open, scientific, and rational debate about these issues. He is a complete coward. The Muslims that oppose homosexuality on cultural grounds are at least fighting what they see as an invasion of "Western" liberalism. What does Fred Phelps do? He runs his fat mouth and hides behind his God, claiming that various natural disasters and accidents are the wrath of his cowardly God. Put your money where your mouth is Phelps. Let's see you stand up for your values with the same courage that Muslims have.

For the record, I am at work and stone sober. Perhaps after ingesting a gallon of wine or so it may make sense.

Why don't you detail the terribly incoherent part of my post, which was intended to be somewhat humorous and sarcastic in the first place.

Oh yeah. You sure got that across. Good thing its so blatantly obvious that you were attempting to be funny. Someone might have been confused.

For the record, throwing the same insult back at someone and passing it off as your own is paramount to accusing someone of having cooties.
