A fascinating historical character is on his deathbed. Fred Phelps probably did more to hasten the end of homophobia than any other single individual.
You may have a really good point there.

They can't be rented, I'm afraid. They're reserved exclusively for adults who need to use them to help people.
Isn't that just a tad hypocritical? Supposedly we hate Fred Phelps for picketing funerals and upsetting grieving relatives, so if we do exactly the same thing then how are we any better? Why should it be OK for us to do it, but not him? Because he 'deserves' to be hated on?
Good. I wish there were an afterlife so he could see how wrong he was.
How do you know he's wrong? Surely he has as much chance as any regligeous person of being correct.
Pure speculation here...but given what Nate's said about his father's behavior in the past (physically and emotionally abusive, addicted to prescription drugs, etc.), my guess would be that in his old age, Fred 'regressed' into some of his old patterns, and the rest of the church felt that he was damaging their community by remaining in it.
I doubt very much that he gave up his beliefs; they are too deeply held, and he is too deeply invested in them.
That's kind of what I was thinking, like senility or something has led him to spouting blatent racism, but I would think hiding him from public would be far more effective. Of course these are obviously not people who make rational decisions.
So, should his funeral be picketed?
Maybe he took up smoking.I'd be more interested to know why, if true, he was excommunicated.
I doubt he has attained Nirvana.
No. Two wrongs don't make a right.

The living will know.
Being that Fred was an attention whore, the worst thing that could be done to him at this point is to totally ignore his funeral.
We should ignore him and ignore his family.
They live on attention.
Which is exactly why his funeral should be picketed, and why he should be disrespected, yea unto pissing on his grave and dancing on and around it (to grungy techno and all!)
So that his family and so-called "church" get a taste of their own medicine.
He will most definently not be missed.
Nathan said his father is nothing but an old-fashioned, anti-Black hate monger.
This from U.K. paper the Telegraph:
Nate Phelps says the perception in some circles that his father was once this champion of civil rights, railing against discrimination, is laughable. “We would all call Black people ‘DNs’ at home. It stood for Dumb ******* and was our private language,” he says. “We thought it was clever to call them that in front of them. He was deeply prejudiced, and he believed the Bible said they were cursed.
