The whole thing is a translation error.
When Philopides Ananananagnostopopolous (the Greek) of Athens translated the Minoan documents sold to him by Leonidas Dibbler in 1520BC, he used the word "Phlapdoodlopollos" meaning "flat" to translate the Minoan term "Squiggle, squiggle, hyphen (thing like a frying pan) dot Komma". Now any student of Aristarchus of Bognor Regis should have known that this does not mean "flat". It means "Flattened, oblate , off-centre or a bit squint, but good enough for government work."
What the ancients knew was that Earth is not spherical, but an oblate ellipsoid.
MARS is flat.
