First Chilean miner rescued

Well if we're all pointing out how it's an international effort, the harness they are using to monitor the miners as they come up where designed and made in New Zealand. :P

I wonder how they decided who would be first?

My boss says it was decided to take the strongest and fittest men men out first (in case anything went wrong), then the weakest and ill men, and then everyone else.

ETA: Rescued: Florencio Avalos, Mario Sepulveda, Juan Illanes, Carlos Mamani, Jimmy Sanchez, Osman Araya, Jose Ojeda

To follow: Claudio Yanez, Mario Gomez, Alex Vega, Jorge Galleguillos, Edison Pena, Carlos Barrios, Victor Zamora, Victor Segovia, Daniel Herrera, Omar Reygadas, Esteban Rojas, Pablo Rojas, Dario Segovia, Yonni Barrios, Samuel Avalos, Carlos Bugueno, Jose Henriquez, Renan Avalos, Claudio Acuna, Franklin Lobos, Richard Villarroel, Juan Aguilar, Raul Bustos, Pedro Cortez, Ariel Ticona, Luis Urzua

The BBC presenter (back in the studio in London) was filling time while the 9th miner was on his way up:
She just declared the cable was being drawn up slowly because of the risk of decompression.:rolleyes:

The 9th miner (now on the surface) has a lung condition. I know the rescuers were concerned about dust getting into the capsule affecting the health of all the miners, but they were probably twice as concerned for this guy. I wouldn't be surprised if that's why he was pulled up so slowly.

Strongest, fittest and with the most mining experience, in order to let the crew on top know how the shaft was holding up.

Immediately after them, it is/was the mentally frail and/or miners with diseases that needs medical attention. The last group of miners going up will be the mentally strongest, followed by the medics and rescueers who have gone down.

This makes me very, very happy, and it's brightened my day no end :D.

I never thought I could look at a hole in the ground for so long. It's like a happy ending from a sappy movie every hour. I hate sappy movies, but this is real, so I don't mind.
Great work by the rescuers, but above all kudos to the miners. Staying in a dark and damp place with 33 people for over 2 months without losing your mind... many people could learn from that discipline.
And number 11 just came up!

This is the most incredible, moving news story I can remember. I too have a lump in my throat watching this. There's some great comments on the BBC news website, including this from Minero Tasmaniano, a Tasmanian mining engineer working in Mongolia:

To have watched all of the drama unfold at the Copiapo Mine has been simply amazing. Today is a true testament to the human spirit and the ability to endure the hardest of situations and it should certainly make us step back and think about what really is important in life.

This sums up beautifully how I feel today. Congratulations to all those involved in the rescue effort.

Agreed. I was watching a cable channel on TV last night, and when I glanced up, they were covering it live.

I watched the first 3 miners come up--the second one rescued was a hoot. His fist pumping, his gift bag of rocks, his smile, his bear-hugging...

I will be most heartened when the last miner is rescued, and this thread fades.

The 12th miner, who has hypertension and diabetes, has just been rescued.

It's great news to see them up and when the first guy was out and his daughter burst into tears....well, I was a little moist in the eyes myself.

As a side note, read a few of these from here:-

Apparently it's all staged and the miners should be in a much worse condition and probably they will leave some down there and maybe they found something under there that the great and evil NWO/Illuminati didn't want anyone knowing about.......FFS:jaw-dropp:jaw-dropp:jaw-dropp:jaw-dropp:jaw-dropp:jaw-dropp.

You can take the miners out of the mine but you can't take the DUMBASS out of a CTer.

:D Of course its a coverup. The mine collapsed because the Illuminati stole all the gold and transported it to their secret hollow moon base.

I worry a bit about that shuttle / capsule. If the line were to break, do the wheels on that thing have any kind of brake?
