SAN JOSE MINE, Chile – Florencio Avalos, the first of 33 miners to be rescued, has surfaced after 69 days underground.
He stepped out of a rescue capsule amid sobs from his young son and received a bracing bear hug from Chilean President Sebastian Pinera.
Avalos smiled widely as he hugged rescuers, then Pinera, as his wife, two sons and father looked on. His 7-year-old son Bairo sobbed, as did Chile's first lady, Cecilia Morel. Then Avalos was escorted into a medical triage center for the first of a battery of tests.

It is pretty amazing. Watching live now. Let's hope all of them are brought out safe and sound. It seems the technology is working very well so far. :)

I was watching the first rescue at the gym when I was on the treadmill. I started clapping when the cage hit the surface, and everyone was looking at me as if I lost my mind.

Oh, yes, dusty here too.

:Dancing_biggrin:Right now, I can't post any rational comment on this event. Pure emotion is leading me. Mainly joy.

EDITED: I'm feeling a bit more sober now. This is a big triumph for Chile and her people, I hope it will be complete. As I understand, the order and discipline kept by the trapped miners was a major factor in their survival. The goverment's commitment to use any resource it had and technological assitance by other nations made the rescue as succesful as it has been so far.

up to 3, predicting that if it all goes well then it'd going to take another 34 hours to get everyone up.

The bozo on MSNBC just talked right through the fourth miner's surfacing without even realizing that he was up. She was too busy listening to some doctor giving really mundane information.

Her:"What do you think the doctors will be doing for them."

Him:"I think they'll ask them how they feel."

Wow! We definitely needed an expert for that.

Well at least they even showed it, by the time of the 4th moon landing everyone had gotten bored and gone home.

My boss is Chilean, I think this might be a good time to ask for a payrise... :) We've got the BBC live feed on in the office.

Wow! I had to go to bed last night when the rescue didn't start quite as early as planned, and by the time I woke up, they had four on the surface! I saw the fifth guy live while I was getting up.

It's so wonderful to be able to follow a really good-news story amidst all this death and disaster.

Rolfe.
