FCC indecency complaints up dramatically

I'd like to see the actuall wording in the law with regards to the FCC.

Really my question has to do with how they determine what is offensive. My understanding is that if there are enough complaints, they consider the show to offend the majority of the population. Something like that.

My question is, what would happen if a group of us sent our own complaints, saying that there isn't enough smut on tv. Perhaps pointing out a show where they could have shown titti, but didn't. Essentially, if we outnumbered the anti-titti complaints, then we would be considered the norm.

Anyone join me in a letter writing campaign?

You might get more attention if you simply mail the FCC pictures illustrating the sort of thing you'd like to see on television.

The FCC acts like the mob. These broadcast companies would rather pay their fines then face an angry FCC the next tiem they want to renew liceneses or buy a station. Its a shakedown. I hope FOX takes them to court. They need to be called out. Imagine the FCC going to court with the handful of letters as justification for millions in fines?! Theyd be humiliated.

And the FCC says it only responds to complaints...

Steve Allen was a noted humorist, author, and skeptic. He wrote many skeptical books, and was well-respected in the community.

Towards the end of his life, however, he became almost obsessed with promoting "decency" on television. He started up a foundation, and would annually run full-page ads in national newspapers urging people to fight against the awful smut that infested the airwaves.

Steve Allen railed against pop culture for all of his professional career, not just toward the end of his life. He used to read rock and roll lyrics on his show in a deadpan voice and would get some big laughs. I remember his reading of "Be-Bop-A-Lula". Funny stuff.

He also refused to have Elvis the Pelvis on his show until The King appeared on another show and got huge ratings. And even then, when Steve Allen finally brought Elvis on his show, he had Elvis in a tux singing "Hound Dog" to a bassett hound by candlelight in a watered down, easy listening version. Sad stuff.

Evidence over the air TV is dying?

Not around here. Over 15 different broadcast stations.

I suppose the broadcast companies care a great deal about indecency claims, since they seem arbitrarily made and can cost lots of money.

I don't have easy legal access to the Nielsen stuff any longer but the 3 network share is below 50% which is a killer. You may have 15 stations but what is going to happen is that they are going to look more like schlock am stations over time. As I recall, viewership to the networks is going down alarmingly and one major source of erosion is the internet.

What is going to happen is that some arbitrarily large number of TV outlets (cable and OTA) are going to come to a state of equilibrium with roughly equal shares in each market. This will be good news for cable and absolutely terrible news for the OTA guys. No more Armani suits for the news readers.

It has been a long time coming but it was forseen when cable penetration hit 60% years ago (that was the penetration of TV that effectively killed radio years before that).

BTW, if affiliates judge that crap reruns a la Nick at Night will perform better than the network crap, watch for the affiliates to jump ship thus hastening the demise of the Nets. Watch as more become dual affiliates and cherry pick the best crap from the available network crap thus further eroding Network shares.

I'm down, seriously.
Smallville. Tonight. There was a naked girl. But not one boob, cheek, or furry patch. Just conveniently placed fence posts.

As Americans, we have the right to get smut piped free into our homes. Canadians get it. So do Europeans. Are they more free a peeples than those of us in the freest country in the world?

Aparently, it only takes 3 original complaints, and a bunch of copies.

I presume your three networks are CBS, NBC and ABC. You overlook WB, Fox, UPN. Plus Univision, Telemundo, Aztecamerica, PAX. Locally, I also get several independents and three public television stations. Over the air broadcasting is pretty strong around here. I don't forsee a time when over the air broadcasting is dead. In fact, if the industry/govt ever gets it's ◊◊◊◊ togenter, it's possible it'll be stronger than ever once digital broadcasts become dominant.

Point is, big govt is bad enough without the self appointed censors providing the reinforcement.

Interesingly, I think the PTC would go insane over what's shown on broadcast Spanish language stations. If only hey had a Spanish speaker among them.

Manfred, if you want to see some TV porn, just start tuning in to daytime soaps.
