I love poetry!

I have a degree in English literature, and my primary concentration was on the Romantic Period poets, but I also love the Modernists and the post-Modernists as well.

Here are two of my absolute favorites:

The Emperor of Ice Cream

Call the roller of big cigars,
The muscular one, and bid him whip
In kitchen cups concupiscent curds.
Let the wenches dawdle in such dress
As they are used to wear, and let the boys
Bring flowers in last month's newspapers.
Let be be finale of seem.
The only emperor is the emperor of ice-cream.

Lacking the three glass knobs, that sheet
On which she embroidered fantails once

All the Dead Dears

OOOO Plath, here's one of my favorites. I use it with my kids to discuss personification. It's always struck me as being somewhat autbiographical.

The Pope's Penis

Helen of Troy Does Countertop Dancing

The world is full of women
who'd tell me I should be ashamed of myself
if they had the chance. Quit dancing.
Get some self-respect
and a day job.
Right. And minimum wage,
and varicose veins, just standing
in one place for eight hours
behind a glass counter
bundled up to the neck, instead of
naked as a meat sandwich.
Selling gloves, or something.
Instead of what I do sell.
You have to have talent
to peddle a thing so nebulous
and without material form.
Exploited, they'd say. Yes, any way
you cut it, but I've a choice
of how, and I'll take the money.

I do give value.
Like preachers, I sell vision,
like perfume ads, desire
or its facsimile. Like jokes
or war, it's all in the timing.
I sell men back their worse suspicions:
that everything's for sale,
and piecemeal. They gaze at me and see
a chain-saw murder just before it happens,
when thigh, ass, inkblot, crevice, tit, and nipple
are still connected.
Such hatred leaps in them,
my beery worshippers! That, or a bleary
hopeless love. Seeing the rows of heads
and upturned eyes, imploring
but ready to snap at my ankles,
I understand floods and earthquakes, and the urge
to step on ants. I keep the beat,
and dance for them because
they can't. The music smells like foxes,

There sure are a lot of dangerous birds around.

Lot's Wife

What else could she do, when that old fool,
picked in prudence, holier than she,
God's loudspeaker, forced her to climb
up out of the plain, start again with him,

to Nature as he called it, milking
his camels, hoarding their dung
for fuel, hearing him talk to his dreadful god
while the stars hummed like bees
in the white night of the desert.

She was used to her oily kitchen
on the brawling street, the panniered donkeys,
dust-devils at corners, hawkers of fried cakes,
women with cures and curses,
littered courtyards, glossy young merchants
and soldiers in the market for discreet
invitations, suppers at twilight
on long terraces, with her
bawdy, middle-aged companions.
Of course she paused, there
at the head of the pass, at sunset,
looked back, longingly, thinking
it over, then retraced her steps.
He, to save face, shouted some imprecation
about fiery rain, pillars of salt...
But she, uncaring, walked back
down to the great plain,
and the smoke of little cities on the evening air.

Lot's Wife by Kristine Batey.

While Lot, the conscience of a nation,
struggles with the Lord,
she struggles with the housework.
The City of Sin is where
she raises the children.
Ba'al or Adonai--
Whoever is God--
the bread must still be made
and the doorsill swept.
The Lord may kill the children tomorrow,
but today they must be bathed and fed.
Well and good to condemn your neighbors' religion,
but weren't they there
when the baby was born,
and when the well collapsed?
While her husband communes with God,
she tucks the children into bed.
In the morning, when he tells her of the judgment,
[that is, God's decision to destroy the city]
she puts down the lamp she is cleaning
and calmly begins to pack.
In between bundling up the children
and deciding what will go,
she runs for a moment
to say goodbye to the herd,
gently patting each soft head
with tears in her eyes for the animals that will not understand.
She smiles blindly to the woman
who held her hand at childbed.
It is easy for eyes that have always turned to heaven
not to look back;
those who have been--by necessity--drawn to earth
cannot forget that life is lived from day to day.
Good, to a God, and good in human terms
are two different things.
On the breast of the hill, she chooses to be human,
and turns, in farewell--

Today, I was discussing with somebody about traumatic past relationships and this Greek poem of the poet Manolis Anagnostakis came to my mind. It's one of my favorites.

Archaic Torso of Apollo

I was quite depressed when Australian poet Judith Wright died.

I am fond of Poe's work and love Anne Sexton's poetry but my favorite is one by Yeats.
