After Fayyad resigned to make room for the future Palestinian unity government, would people in here agree that the step concerning the unity government might moderate radical elements and thus help to achieve peace and finally the creation of the Palestinian state - or the other way around: radicalizing the moderate elements and therefore, pushing Israel into an offensive corner?

Hamas is just puppets of Syria and Iran. Why do you think Khaled Mashal lives in Syria? ;)

I assume that your description rather fits concerning Hezbollah, but that wasn't the OP's question anyway. :p [Nor did it mention Russia, just in case] :D :p

I dont know, i just hope it will moderate the radical elements. But im not that optimistic.

Well, there's also a chance that they all fall out with one another so that the unity Government never comes into existence or falls apart rather quickly. :boggled:

indeed. But I hope for the Palestinian people that this will not happen, and that this new government will be strong (not with weapons but diplomacy) and realy work hard towards peace and really representing the interest of the people.

Bad news from the "unity front":

Palästinenser-Zwist

[Rough translation] :

Scuffle among Palestinians

Popularity of Hamas threatens unity government

Due to the Gaza-War, radicals regained reputation: Surveys show that Hamas is becoming more and more popular. But this developement may widen the split between Palestinians - and threaten the process of building a national unity government ...

Teufelskreis

War and Terrorism is radicalising the people on both sides of the conflict, they tend to elect radicals, and elected radicals tend to continue or even intensifying the War and Terrorism.

while i hope to finally see some light at the end of the tunnel, it seems to get darker and darker, and no light in sight.

a sick situation. The moderates on both sides will suffer most from it. Especially the innocent like Kids.

Neither Hamas nor Fatah can effectively challenge Israel, so they challenge each other.

If there were to be a unity government Israel would extend their sanctions to the West Bank because they refuse to deal with Hamas.

If Hamas moderated its stance, another militant party would spring up to take their place, with Iranian and Syrian backing.

I don't see much hope for progress on this front, I'm afraid.

Well, it is even worse because Bibi recently announced that he decided to take Lieberman and his party into the boat of legislation, a step that suggests that the peace process as a whole is in danger from both sides. Not to mention that Bibi's coalition most probably will include 4 other far-right parties, according to Der Spiegel - and whatever happened to the left in Israel.

A few things in response:

1. http://haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1072033.html
Labor (on the Left) is still considering joining the coalition

2. Lieberman may very likely end up being indicted, and forced to step aside from any Cabinet-level post he is given

3. Bibi Netanyahu is not interested in the "peace process" -- he is interested in organizing wide-ranging cooperative steps with the Palestinians, including getting them to abandon their reliance on violent Jihad as a societal norm.

4. Land for Peace (i.e. -- Full withdrawal behind the 1949 Cease Fire Lines) is not an option at all. "Peace for Peace" is the only reasonable goal.

3. Bibi Netanyahu is not interested in the "peace process"
accurate..

-- he is interested in organizing wide-ranging cooperative steps with the Palestinians, including getting them to abandon their reliance on violent Jihad as a societal norm.
I would rephrase this as him wanting them to give up fighting it and accept what he wants to do with them....a permanent subservient vassal "state".

Netanyahu is an obstacle your nation needs to get over...

Here is an interesting map:

Netanyahu is an obstacle your nation needs to get over...

He is our Prime Minister, and will do what he was elected to do: namely, seek peace.

The Arabs need to get over the unhealthy obsession with the 1949 Rhodes Agreements as a basis for anything in 2009.

Lieberman is a threat to Israel and a threat to the Middle East.

Israel has to get over their "Greater Israel" bs dream and return to rational and sane thinking. The Palestinians have a right to their own state in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

As has already been said, don't get your panties in such a twist over Yvett.
He will be headed to court soon enough, and will be forced to resign.

The corruption investigation into Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman is likely to produce charges of money laundering, fraud and breach of trust, police sources said Saturday.

Israel has to get over their "Greater Israel" bs dream and return to rational and sane thinking.

Return to those 'peaceful days' of 1949, you mean?

The Palestinians have a right to their own state in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

They have no such inherent right.

They have no such inherent right.

Are you saying that no population has an inherent right to self-determination, or just that the Palestinians don't? If the former, then your opinion is out of the mainstream of international thought. If the latter, I'd like to know the basis for such blatant racism.
