Peter Wald's family truly believed he would rise from the dead.

They believed it because they had prayed for it, every single day, while his corpse lay rotting for six months in an upstairs bedroom of their Hamilton home.
...
He'd suffered from diabetes and his left foot had become infected. But he had refused to go to the hospital and believed God would cure him.
...
Kaling sealed in the door and the vents with duct tape to protect her family from the smell of the cadaver.
...
Expecting the eviction, the family packed the dead man's belongings and had his shoes and bags ready to go.

"That was how strong our faith was," Kaling says.
...
"It's an extremely sad case…she truly believed her husband was going to be resurrected from the dead, even after six months," said assistant crown attorney Janet Booy.

Booy says she researched the law extensively and could not find another case like this.
...
But she still believes strongly in resurrection, and says there have been many "documented" cases of it around the world. Her faith was not shaken by the legal consequences, she says.
I mean you'd think that the sound of rats in there would have at least given her faith a run for its money but no... rock solid... still until this day. Very impressed. Definitely up there on a very rarefied level of stupid.

The idea of resurrection bothers a lot of believers who ask why their loved one can't be raised up if Lazarus was... it's kind of sad. This just takes it to a whole new level. Religious poison to the mind... blocks true mental health.

If someone had stolen the body then pretended to see him then a new cult could have been born.

I'm perplexed. Do they not believe in heaven? Once a person got there, why the hell would they want to come back?

laws exist and we know that now."
Talk about being out of touch with the real world!
And apparently in Canada, "abuse of a corpse" isn't among them because nobody could think of anything to charge them with.

Sticky point that theologians like to try to bury. It's all down to this Jesus bloke being rather tawdry about when he was meant to be returning i.e. sort of next week. Folk were meant to be waiting for him to come back, but some of them rather inconveniently dropped dead before he came back so they had to talk around that problem by mutterings about how we'd all be resurrected when he came back. Yeah I know it wouldn't pass as a plot line in the most hackneyed fantasy novel.

It is (under somewhat different name), but prosecutors decided not to press the charges:
The criminal charges originally laid in the case – neglect of duty regarding a dead body and offering an indignity to a body – were withdrawn and replaced with that single charge under the Coroner's Act.

Stupid beliefs lead to stupid actions.

He believed god would cure his diabetes. He didn't. She believed god would resurrect him. He didn't. She still believes...

If god exists, he is a colossal dick.

but the apologist might say they didn't believe hard enough. Those poor godless heathens weren't giving it their all

I have a worse idea along that general line.

Or the other old stand-by, "sometimes god says no." If you live in a world that behaves indistinguishably from one that has no god, but desperately want a god in it, it's best to give the god, and your faith in him, an escape clause.
