Fake flu vaccine

Beady,

Actually, the average IQ is 100, meaning that 50% of the population is, by definition, above 100 and 50% of the population is below 100.

BillyJoe

Wrong.

Consider the following. You have a population of five people. Four of them have an IQ of 10. One has an IQ of 100. As a total population, their average IQ is 28 (140 divided by 5 equals 28), but 80% of that population is below the average. Averages don't split the population evenly.

If our society has gotten so complicated that 50% of the population is incapable of understanding what's going on, and the other 50% has to babysit them, then we're all going down the drain, anyway.
John, et. al. good thread so far. But I think we ARE going down that very drain you are afraid of because there is good solid evidence for the stupidity of the general populace.

Point 1) Around 50% of the US population STILL believe that Saddam was involved in 9/11, had WMDs, and think we have already found them.

Point 2) I think fewer than 25% of the US general population believe that evolution is right. Most people want creationism taught in science classes.

Point 3) More than half the US population think that fairies literally exist.

And on and on and on .....

The dismally low level of common sense "out there" negates the practical application of your principles, no matter whether they are theoretically valid or not.

I said the population. ;)

The point is that if you have a disproportionate amount of stupid or smart people, then more than 50% of them will be on one side or the other of the average. A lot of people for some reason can't grasp that. The example I provided shows how it works in an easy to grasp size (most people count 1, 2, 3, many....).

The good point is that pretty much everyone here can grasp the concept in the small and apply it to the large.

Yes, I understood your point, but you were taking me out of context to make it. :(

Beady,

Here's a quote from your link....

What does it mean when your IQ is 100? That means that half of the population scores higher than you. The other half scores lower than you.
And here's a quote from my post ....

Hmmm, I don't think I'm in need of a lesson. :nope:

IQ is defined as (intellectual age)/(physical age).

Most people look at IQ as defining whether you are smarter than the average person; smarter people interpret as defining whether you are smarter than the average person of your physical age.

Actually smart people like me know it defines whether you are older or younger than the most common age of people who have your present intellectual capability (i.e., who scored the same as you on the same test).

Regardless, test scores don't reflect character, and we can point to at least one President who has (probably cheated) high SAT scores that don't reflect his behaviors.

Hint: it's not the one whose "high crime" was cheating on his wife.

John,

50% of the population has an IQ over 100. All of us here probably fall into that category and perhaps we are all capable, given sufficient time, of doing whay you say. But what about the other 50%? Are you happy to sacrifice them on the alter of personal responsibility?

BillyJoe

Sounds like a good idea;

every time some idiot takes himself out of the genepool by playing gauntlet on ATVs with rifles, or ice-floe jumping,
Three teenage boys have drowned after falling into the ocean at Pouch Cove, Newfoundland. The boys were jumping from one ice floe. The practice is called skipping, or copying, and it's a common game for Newfoundland kids. Two boys fell in the freezing water. Another boy fell in after trying to rescue the first two. A fourth boy ran for help, but it was too late to save them.
From the shallowend of the genepool
or standing on the bonnet of a friend's vehicle (car surfing) and braining himself when he loses footing... I cheer, I say : What tragedy? I just hope he hadn't time to breed before he died. And I shake my head when the government attempts to regulate against these behaviours as a knee-jerk reaction.

PPG,

Well, that was good for a joke but assume you were not being serious.
(otherwise please join the shallow end of the genepool :D )
In any case, I was talking about a different group of individuals from those characterized by your post.

I agree with the sentiment, but to me regulation can still be necessary: If the behaviour endangers other people (who do not deserve to be removed from the gene-pool), then regulation should be enforced, even though it would not be a loss if the youngsters kill themselves.
