Fairtrade Cocoa

To be fair, Cain was mocking a post I made in the meat eating thread. The point he seems to be making is that I'm somehow a hypocrite for eating meat but supporting Fairtrade. He's pretty good at mockery.

I only followed the meat eating thread briefly.

So Cain, if those posts were really just meant to be sarcastic to make a point, then pretty much ignore everything I typed to you

you can just say "ha ha, you're grandstanding on a moral argument!" Nevermind the fact that the poster is giving a legitimate reasoning for why they feel the way they do.

That is, if you consider a moral argument "legitimate reasoning." What basis do you have not only for an objective morality, but that yours is correct? It's all based on emotional manipulation, "think about the children." Cui bono?

no its preventing war. nothing to do with emotional manipulation.

uneducated poor people seem not to be able to build up working nations in Africa. Plus slaves and underpaid workers have alot anger in them that might one day lead to bloody uprisings. this leading to massacres that then requier our young girls and boys stepping in to prevent or stop a genocide in Africa. and such wars are paid by tax payers. and they cost alot.

so we have the choice, pay now a few cents more for cocoa beans and take care no slavery involved and they get decent payments (wich are still extremly low compared to us) and kids go to school to get educated.
or we pay a few Billion dollars for yet another war or peacekeeping effort.

no emotions, its only about money, paying more will save us alot money.

I think you convinced me. I think you convinced me that the "moral" argument was a more promising route. So now we need to buy fair-trade chocolate in order to prevent war. Even if the scenario you lay out is the least bit plausible it still makes no sense at the margin for me the consumer, which again goes back to the inescapable logic of self-interested individuals maximizing material advantage.

Here's a great idea, why don't I squander more money every year on "fair trade" chocolate, and then, because not enough consumers were on board, the government will extort more money from via taxation to prevent some war. War is going to happen regardless of the type of chocolate *I* purchase.

Not even you believe this nonsense because earlier you admitted it's OK for someone who breeds like crazy to buy non-fair-trade chocolate:

Well, how can it make sense for that guy? Doesn't he realize he's contributing to a possible massacre which could turn into a possible war, which could possibly engulf the region and then possibly the world, including, possibly, his own town?

Here comes the anti-slavery crowd, all smug, self-satisfied and annoying. Objectively PROVE why slavery is "wrong."

Slavery does leave a bitter taste in my mouth, but that's what chocolate's for. Personally, I do not take a partisan position because I don't care; if "cruelty-free" cocoa tastes better and costs less, then I'll buy it. I'm pro consumer sovereignty.
