I'm relieved, and really hope this includes Google and Siri, but data sharing should be opt-in, not opt-out!

I occasionally get freaked out by the coincidental advertising on Facebook. For example, a couple days ago I made a grilled cheese sandwich for the first time in several months. That very same evening, I got an ad for grilled cheese sandwiches. Never had before, as far as I can recall.

No, I had not looked up a recipe online, or asked Alexa.

I'm relieved, and really hope this includes Google and Siri, but data sharing should be opt-in, not opt-out!

So should religious studies in schools. And the opposite with organ donation in my opinion, but life sucks and the IT global corporations want to make as much money as poss'

Anybody here from one of those places and can tell us which apps you can shutter?

Seems like Facebook and their problems with user data get a lot of press these days. Seems like the best app to shutter would be Facebook.

It's just kinda funny to me that people complain about some specific way their data is shared while at the same time it is known that if data is not shared Facebook can't afford to exist.

People only complain when they actually see it in a targeted ad. "Oh my gawd they really are using my data!" There it is in black and white for you to see. Now you care. You got a peek behind the curtain.

But when it's all slick and working properly you never even see it. They are going to get/sell everything they can get their hands on one way or another. As long as people don't see it nobody complains.

Facebook throws a bone sometimes to placate privacy concerns as a way of falsely comforting their users. Magicians call that misdirection.

Read the post before assuming I don't know Google and Siri don't belong to Facebook.

Both those companies could learn from Facebook.

I hope Google or Apple try and one-up Facebook and make data-sharing opt-in.

Sounds like you haven't used Facebook since 2010.

I've set all my ad preferences and get cool stuff. I get things like requests for subjects for scientific studies (doing one now, which has been very rewarding).

I get things like courses to study which are relevant to my interests, running or hiking events, environmental organisations' announcements.

These ads are often from sites I've viewed on Google or my iPhone anyway.

Facebook will be letting you stop sharing with other apps, so that should mean not sharing Facebook data with Google or Apple/Siri, Microsoft.

But most people prefer to complain, or opt-out of Facebook completely, instead of using it as a tool like snail mail in all its permutations (paper junk mail supports that industry).

It would be better for those people if Facebook data-sharing was opt-in, yes.

Setting your ad preferences is a bit like setting Google alerts.

Ads are almost indistinguishable from news these days anyway.

Event scientific studies that hit the health headlines are selling the fruits of their labour and hoping for income from paid downloads / journal subscriptions.
