Milo Yiannopoulos: "I didn't really understand the physical reality of how institutionalized the brutality is in America. The manner in which they arrest you, they put you in manacles, everybody is arrested like an MS 13 gang member. It was physically degrading. It was frightening. I don't think I've ever been frightened like that before. I was weeping like an old woman for an hour. I wouldn't wish it on anyone."

The most consistent theme of conservatism is being completely unable/unwilling to understand how a thing is bad until it happens to you.

MAGA dairy farm owner tells job applicant to ‘get bent’ for requesting $20 an hour, despite complaining about worker shortage

TL/DR: Stupid MAGA ◊◊◊◊ can't find workers for her dairy farm, admits she might lose farm, but insists she would never vote for a Democrat, calls them communists.

Meh. No sympathy, if true. Long since run out of ◊◊◊◊◊ to give for such people. And they were suckers on the government teat even when the did have immigrant workers.

To be fair (not that there's any real reason to be), the applicant wanted free housing in addition to the $20/hr. The farm didnt even offer employee housing, soooo... that's pretty weird, in addition to being a pretty massive perk.

On dairy farms, or any heavy labor farms, it's not exactly out of the ordinary to ask for housing. Dairy farms aren't in the metro area, and work usually starts at 4-5 a.m. and ends around 12-15 hours later. As she said, she has to milk 3 times a day.

Free housing usually equates to a room that has a shared bathroom. Yeah, probably more than most people ask for and this woman doesn't supply it so that seems like a dumb thing to ask for, imo. Then again her stupid ass could be making it all up too, I can never tell with Trump supporters and I legit assume they're lying by default.

Sorta? I know housing is part of the package for a lot of farm jobs. It may not be great housing but its there because farms tend to be far from a lot of other things.

I think here in Vermont it's pretty much a routine part of the job. Usually a trailer or the like, sometimes an old house that's shared. Aside from the rural aspect of it all, it's pretty likely that the workers will be immigrants without any other home base.

She probably doesn't even have a farm, she lives in a van down by the river.

Well sure, I'm sure it's common in deeply rural areas, but from the way this woman talked, she didn't offer it because it was (I guess) not that remote.

Anyway, the point was that the headline was misleading, not the economics of dairy farm employment. It wasn't *just* the hourly wage she balked at- it was in addition to the not-exactly-inconsequential benefit of free housing.

That's the story here in South Jersey, where most farms are like 10 minutes from a shopping mall. The housing is virtually required because the workers are temporary migrants, with no means of paying for year round housing and transportation any other way but farm barracks, then back home for the winter.

Same in parts of the UK. The arable farm near my dad's house, had portacabins for example

Right, and I'm not disputing the realities of that lifestyle. But to title it as her flipping out about paying a worker $20/hr, without mentioning the free housing, is pretty skewed. Housing (presumably including utilities) is by far the largest chunk of most paychecks, even if the digs ain't exactly luxury. I mean, $20/hr, but no commuting expenses, no electrric bill, no rent... that's a hell of a perk, and shouldn't go unmentioned.

Meh, the title seemed pretty accurate. It said she told him to "get bent" for requesting $20/hr + housing and by her own words that's literally what she said lol. If we're talking honestly, $20/hr isn't exactly crazy wages for the work they do on the farm. You can start at McDonald's or the liquor store up here at around $16-17/hr with rare, if any, 15 hours days. Granted no room and board, but not only are those not luxury, it's also usually just a bedroom. It doesn't have much privacy, and everyone that lives there is kind of on the same schedule, which sucks when you want to shower, ◊◊◊◊, etc. The portion of the electricity required to run maybe a TV and a lamp would be dollars a month, and these aren't place with waiting lines to stay at. There's no competition for these living spaces, and you could get the equivalent in rural North Dakota for $300\mth, maybe less.

Anyway, I digress. The fact is this woman had a lot of complaints and most of them were things that Trump directly destroyed. The dairy industry through tariffs and ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ with Canada, diesel (as we all know) and unskilled labor. Yeah, sucks to suck.

Absolutely doesnt. The title just say the $20/hr. There's only one line farther down the article, quoting her, that mentions the free housing (I didn't follow the links to her tweety video on first viewing).

No argument here. My issue was more focused on the media portrayal. It's a side issue, yeah, bit it really gets under my skin when they try to "frame" the story with a select ommission for readers who aren't going to read the whole thing.

Right, im not saying they are luxury accomodations, but not having those comparable bills at all when living on the farm for sure should be mentioned whenever the rate is invoked.

Damn. See ya soon, neighbor.

The article said her efforts to recruit were no more than hanging a help wanted sign on her fence. Doesn't seem like a serious effort?

The video she made started off reassuring people about her calling a suicide holiness or something. I'm wondering if this was all pulled out of a different context? Like, crying about her troubles without paying attention to the accuracy of the dairy farm employment situation? I dunno.

No ◊◊◊◊? Shows how much I pay attention lol.

Yeah, it's part of the package deal I reckon.
Damn. See ya soon, neighbor.

Just looked it up! I picked the town of Rugby because it had a few dairy farms within driving distance and I found a 2 bedroom, 1 bath for $450\month, plus utilities so you'd be in for ~$600\mth in the winter. They range all over, but rural living in ND is pretty cheap.

She could just be getting ready to start a gofundme too lol. The article said she was using students up until they went back to school, so it sounds like her effort to find help starts and stops at how much it will cost her. Nonetheless, $20\hr to work outdoors in a North Dakota winter taking care of a dairy farm? ◊◊◊◊ that lol.

Trump supporters do enjoy playing the victim.

I don't think it's realistic to assume the free housing for farm labor has anything to do with rental costs. At least where we are, housing for farm labor is likely to belong to the farm, and to be provided by the farm. They set aside a plot for a mobile home, or have a tenant house. Rental cost is not a factor.

Here we have as well as the usual population of farm workers, many of them undocumented, a seasonal and legal group of migrant workers from Jamaica, who come during apple season, which is also, therefore, cricket season. Most of them are housed in communal housing of some sort. One sees them often at the grocery store in fall, as they tend to come by the vanload, A boon to the retailers, but you definitely want to get in different checkout line.

Because they are almost certainly going to be buying in bulk and taking a long time
And one stands in line while the others race around doing the shopping, dumping everything on the conveyor when the lone guy is up to bat.

The guys around here use self checkout in order to 'forget to scan' half their stuff, or at least the most expensive items.
