Fabrice Muamba collapses on the pitch

I was watching the rugby so I just saw this on the BBC. I hope he recovers.

Twitter is going mad with reports that he's died; I hope they are wrong. It's eerily reminiscent of Marc-Vivian Foé.

Apparently the Spurs fans were class, chanting his name.

I just saw the footage - Sports fans are so interesting sometimes - kill the bum is a common cat call - as soon as it became apparent how bad the situation was you could see Spurs fans at the point of tears.

As you say Walrus, very very classy behaviour

Some good news:

Fabrice Muamba in stable condition

Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba appears to be in a stable condition at a North London hospital after he collapsed on the pitch in the FA Cup tie with Tottenham.

After being treated by six paramedics, Muamba, 23, was rushed to hospital where a spokesman said he is currently in a stable condition after medical staff managed to restore his breathing.

Edited to add: The story has been updated. He's in critical condition but he has been stabilized.

However, the club have now released a statement which read: ''Bolton Wanderers can confirm that Fabrice Muamba has been admitted to the heart attack centre at London Chest hospital where he is currently in a critically ill condition in intensive care.

''No further information will be issued at this stage. The club has requested the media to respect his family's privacy at this time.''

Yay! Err, while I don't like soccer and do not know the player I am quite glad that he is alive and stable.

They're saying it was cardiac arrest now. Hope he pulls through.

As a Bolton fan I've always liked Muamba. That said if he does survive I can't see him playing football again.

The amount of time he wasn't breathing for is really bad. I was out with one of my friends who is an A&E doctor at the time and he was amazed he made it to the end of the day.

I'm a Spurs season ticket holder and at the game. The entire stadium went silent within 10 seconds of his collapsing. Everyone knew that something was very wrong.

There were people around him very quickly so although he's still in critical condition, I hope that enough was done at the time to allow him a full recovery.

Get well Fab.

I read that his heart wasn't beating independently for almost 2 hours.

Seems to be the case. He wasn't breathing or showing a heart beat when they took him off the field. I'm guessing they got him on life support pretty quickly or he'd already be dead.

I was reading somewhere that high level sportmen with a heart condition such as an arrhythmia are twice as likely to have a heart attack than less active people with the same condition. Any doctors know if that's the case?

Its very clear on the footage he is getting resuscitation, that alone has to be enough to put a chill down your spine

The Guardian now reports that he is showing signs of improvement.

The midfielder remains in intensive care after suffering a cardiac arrest during Bolton's FA Cup sixth-round tie at Tottenham on Saturday night, but the London chest hospital said that, while he is still in a critical condition, there are small reasons to be optimistic.

A Bolton statement read: "His heart is now beating without the help of medication and he is also moving his arms and his legs.
