Wrong, I just don't buy your convoluted fiction of what "authoritarian" means.

Why would you be terrified of your own desires?

Not only are you an authoritarian, but you're also a hypocrite:

Apparently an unjust law is anything an authoritarian like you disagrees with. You follow in the proud tradition of nazis and communists.

Dude, now you're rambling. I have to ask you: What do you think 'authoritarian' means?

Kelly is an 18 year old cinema usher who is trying to scrape by through college. In a climate where part-time jobs for teenagers is increasingly tough, she feels lucky to have her occupation. But because of thieves like corplinx, that's all in jeopordy.

"All I'm trying to do is get an education. I can't get a grant, and all the fast food jobs have been taken by poor people trying to feed their families. I can't believe that corplinx could so callously put the cinema under threat just for the sake of saving a few dollars. Where's the free market ethic in that?"

Kelly's manager said he would try as hard as he can to keep as many staff on as he could, but he wasn't sure how long he can hold out. "All I want to know is, what ever happened to supply-side economics?"

This really breaks my heart.. Poor Kelly, has the last job on the planet, and it happens to be in a theatre showing the last movie that will ever be made...

You don't recall correctly. Hitler was a fascist, putting him squarely on the right.

I look forward to this argument, if Tony is willing to engage in it.

Hitler's National Socialism: Closer to capitalism, or closer to socialism?

It would make a good thread, if the title didn't already breach Godwin.

Then I guess the fact that Hitler was a national socialist is a hoax?

1) Jews are mostly on the left. The media, which a right-asskissing wonk like yourself would call 'liberal', is largely controlled by the Jews. It makes no sense that Jews who are liberal would be Jew-haters.

Umm, who said anything about liberal?

Left =! Liberal.

And no, I wouldn't call the media "liberal", if anything, I would call the [american] media inept (with a few exceptions, NPR being one of them). Try again dyke.

2) Jews are extremely capitalistic. They are pretty far from being socialists.

So?

3) Name a single Jewish Republican who has ever run for a national office. For that matter, name a single Jewish Republican. Now name Jewish Democrats. Start with Leiberman for VP in 2000.

Red herring, democrats and republicans are irrellevant when it comes to Hitler's jew-hating leftism.

In other words, genius, Hitler, socialism and hating Jews is DIAMETRICALLY OPPOSED to the modern mainstream left, especially the Jewish component of it.

You have yet to demonstrate that.

Excellent

Evidence?

IIRC Hitler was a socialist and a jew-hater. That allies him more with the ideology of the modern mainstream left than it does with the right.

Tony, I believe you're making a common mistake by keying on the word "socialist" in the title of the Nazi party (the NSDAP) translated as the "National Socialist German Workers Party".

The Nazis and their political party is best described as a form of right-wing German fascism, and they were "socialist" only in their fervent nationalism. The Nazis were intensely anti-Marxist and violently eliminated any and all left-wing political organizations.

Tony said:

Pretty much. The Nazis did call themselves socialists, and their earliest members of the DAP just after the Great War may actually have been, but they soon shifted ground. They supported capitalism and didn't agree that workers should control the means of production (obviously enough, given their propensity for slave labour!). And there were numerous other differences. Add to that the Night of the Long Knives, where Hitler's cadre went out and murdered most of the party members with true socialist leanings and you start to get an idea of the real situation. Oh, and the Nazis were ideologically opposed to Marxism, which isn't very helpful if you're trying to be a socialist.

From Mein Kampf :
The suspicion was whispered in German Nationalist circles that we also were merely another variety of Marxism, perhaps even Marxists suitably disguised, or better still, Socialists. The actual difference between Socialism and Marxism still remains a mystery to these people up to this day. The charge of Marxism was conclusively proved when it was discovered that at our meetings we deliberately substituted the words "Fellow-countrymen and Women" for "Ladies and Gentlemen" and addressed each other as "Party Comrade." We used to roar with laughter at these silly faint-hearted bourgeoisie and their efforts to puzzle out our origin, our intentions and our aims.

We chose red for our posters after particular and careful deliberation, our intention being to irritate the Left, so as to arouse their attention and tempt them to come to our meetings -- if only in order to break them up -- so that in this way we got a chance of talking to the people.

Was the "socialist" moniker merely cosmetic? Did Nazism shun socialist policies and ideology?

Can you define "right-wing" and "left-wing"? I've never seen the terms quantified in an objective or meaningful way.

The "socialist" part in the title of the party referred specifically to German Nationalism. Government supervision, control and management of the means of production, and the transportation, distribution, and exchange of goods was all based on the exaltation of the Aryan ideal, and the removal and/or destruction of all others, especially, but by no means limited to, the Jews.

Since when is the right left thing just about socialism vs. capitalism anyways? Was Hitler a liberal by anybodies standard?

Kodiak said:
Simply stated, "left-wing" means liberal of center with regards to the political spectrum, while "right-wing" means conservative of center with regards to the political spectrum.

Left-wing/Right-wing origins...

Thanks Kodiak, but this is still subjective. For example, according to the definitions in the yahoo link someone like Bin Laden would be a liberal left-winger because he is a revolutionary and someone like Castro would be a right-winger because he is conservative.

You got it. Who ever said politics was simple? ;)

To complicate the issue further, many of today's American conservatives (especially libertarian conservatives) could be considered Jeffersonian liberals, while some of the current members of the Democratic Party would have been most closely aligned with the conservative Tories during America's colonial period.

In a nutshell, context means everything.

So there is no objective meaning and the labels are essentially meaningless when trying to identify a person's ideology. So I ask, why does this stupid and arbitrary distinction from pre-revolutionary France continue to be used?

Flattering will get you no where. ;)

You don't get this so much with the right. That's why righties like Tony get confused when some on the left criticise Israel.

By what metric am I a "righty"?

He doesn't even seem to understand that people like myself aren't criticising all Israelis, just the Israeli government (how anti-authoritarian is that?).

Where's your criticism for the despotic Palestinian and Arab governments?

He's not the only one. It's just a shame that he gets so caught up on little points like that and can't move the debate forward.

You're right, I'm not the only one. Many people, including you, get caught up in the same little points.

Great topic.
If you a Moore fan of course you pay to see the movie. But, if you despise Moore, download it. Like it or not it is an important and historical movie. Moore wins but you get a bit of satisfaction of not linning his pocket anymore than it already has. :D And that is something I think we can all (Bush supporters) be happy about.

Similarly, if you despise an author, but you want to read his/her book, steal it from the bookstore.

i think the point is that the Hitler's nazi party was born in socialism (socialist philosophies and members) and would later begin to part with socialists in pursuit of a more grand devestation of humanity.

socialism breeds fascism....in my opinion.

dont trust wikipedia's definition.

Meh, not a great comparison. It's more like borrowing it from a library that has a few thousand unauthorized copies of a book...

I don't want to start a huge argument, but my view of "file sharing" is this: if you weren't going to pay for it anyway, then there's no one harmed by getting it for free.

Now that's got to be nominated for "Stereotype of the Year" award!

Do you actually know any Jews?
