Explosion at the Boston Marathon.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/meast/10/12/mideast.jihadi.magazine/index.html

"The pressurized cooker should be placed in crowded areas and left to blow up. More than one of these could be planted to explode at the same time. However, keep in mind that the range of the shrapnel in this operation is short range so the pressurized cooker or pipe should be placed close to the intended targets and should not be concealed from them by barriers such as walls."

WTF!?!?!

It doesn't take a genius to make a bomb in a pressure cooker, and it's not just Islamic terrorists who read 'how to make a bomb'-guide on the internet. Terrorists, real ones or wannabes, learn from each other. Anders Breivik is a case in point.

ETA: With that said, it wouldn't be that much of a shock if this attack is linked to Islamic terrorism, but my money is still on a domestic lunatic.

Check out this picture of the second bomb site. Is that a video camera looking straight down on the scene? :)

Another picture has surfaced showing the site before the blast. There is a trash bag about the size of a pressure cooker sitting next to the larger trash bin.

I hope by tomorrow we get to see the video of the person who set that bag there.

Good finds, thanks for posting those. I can see the shadow of a camera in the first pick but fear its pointed at the business entrance.

Second pic is a little scary. I wonder if the bomber dressed as a city worker to avoid suspicion? Who would notice a street cleaner leaving a garbage bag behind?

Eta: I see the camera you mean. I saw an awning light.

I'd like it to be a camera - I really would, but I think you're right.

Interesting, but always remember that could be a red herring. Back in '79 after the DC-10 crash in Chicago the press ran a photograph of someone racing down the runway holding a bolt. The caption read "Found it!". It later turned out that the bolt in question had nothing to do with what happened...

It may be both. In the second image, you see a large grey box, with what appears to be grey "Seal Tite" or "liquatite" depending on who you ask. Looks like this. http://www.cpesupply.com/default.aspx?page=item detail&itemcode=12STNM

On the right, you see a smaller box, with a white wire coming out, that is coiled up underneath the fixture, but transitions from white to black. Something like this.

The coiled up wire does not appear to be power, as that would need to be protected by some type of conduit or pipe. Data cables, not so much.

It could be just a very good camera with tilt, zoom, swivel, etc. Or, a light with a separate photo cell.....

Is that a trash bin or a mailbox?

I suspect the latter; but perhaps it's not important. On the television earlier, I saw a picture taken from an identical angle, taken after the explosion. The bag is no longer there; however, in the after-photo, the steel barricade immediately behind the mailbox/trash receptacle/whatever, is shown partially wrapped around its left side (from the photo's perspective). That suggests to me the bomb must've been somewhere behind that barricade relative to the mailbox-thing.

I've seen the before photo you posted, and also an after one taken from roughly the same spot. The barrier fence is wrapped around the mailbox from behind, leading me to believe that the device must have been further back, behind people. The injuries I've seen in photos also jibe with that.

Here's a link to both photos - avoid the comments though, they're pretty nausea-inducing: http://www1.whdh.com/news/articles/local/10010384080855/exclusive-fbi-investigating-photo-that-shows-bag/
Thanks, I was looking all over for that one. They showed it on the news but I couldn't find it on line.

If there were rescuers there it's possible someone moved it out of the way.

OTOH, it wouldn't be bent in that direction and they found pieces of a black backpack or some kind of bag at both sites and it's hard to picture a pressure cooker and a backpack inside that bag.

I wonder what the time frame was between those two shots? There are a lot fewer people in the after shot.

Dunno, the news called it a trash bin and in this state mail boxes like that are all blue.

I agree about the bomb being inside the fence. I'm sure the Twitterverse will straighten out the news casters.

Just thought of one other possible explanation for the fence bend though it is unlikely. Those barriers are not permanent. If someone moved one section more perpendicular to get past it, .... just covering bases.

I think they'll find some images of someone carrying an overly fat heavy black backback.

But dropping a trash bag next to the trash can is still a possibility. It explains how you could leave something without drawing suspicion. But I think you could also set your pack down by your feet, wait until the crowd changes and walk away hoping people will think it belongs to someone still standing there.

I've worked with security cameras quite a bit over the years, most recently a new building install in 2009. That doesn't look like any camera setup I've ever seen. I'm not saying it isn't, just that I don't think it's likely.

Maybe a forumite in Boston can confirm it, when the area ceases to be a crime scene that is.

Cameras have video and power cables so the cables match. I can't find a 'building camera' that looks like it but lights don't need a video cable.

I agree with you AJM, I'm having trouble seeing the actual camera in that box. But from the street looking up, it could be a camera, the image is too fuzzy to tell.

I'm not sure what you mean by that.

Well from what I can tell from cropped picture I posted of your original image, the housings don't appear to have outdoor camera enclosures. That's the telltale sign that they appear to be light standards, not CCTV cameras. Like I said before, I'd really like to be wrong, but I think don't I am.

It's actally a drop box, not a mail box. The difference is, the (blue) mailboxes have an opening at the top where people can deposit mail, while the(brown) drop box is meant for mailmen to leave packages and letters for later pickup - they're inaccessible to the public.

They're usually seen in pairs in Boston, but I think they remove the blue mailboxes along the route during the marathon, so that nobody can put an explosive in them. Usually, there's one of each on each block on Boylston Street.

ETA: the trash bins in that area are circular things, made out of iron bands with a plastic receptacle in the middle.

You're 10X the expert I am on this type of thing, so I'll divert to your expertise.

Is it possible it's custom made to house both? What is that building? It's been a while since I've been there, so I'm drawing a blank.

Yankee Stadium's gesture this evening was classy.

Agreed. It's time like these that make me proud to be a baseball fan enthusiast addict. When the poo hits the fan, we can all set aside our differences and show our support as Americans.

The Cleveland Indians played "Sweet Caroline" at the beginning of the game in Cleveland. Also, very classy.
