Explosion at the Boston Marathon.

Odd that they searched his apartment then. Not sure what to make of it.

The Saudi officials quoted in the WaPo article says he volunteered to have his apartment searched. Earlier reports did state that it was done with the permission of the residents and was not the result of a warrant.

That just sucks. So they pressured the poor roommate in a 5 hour interrogation, made sure all the neighbors thought the 3 men were involved, and took stuff, probably all the computers which of course students need, and all based on the fact one of the roommates was there and they are Saudi Nationals.

I sure hope they actually had a reason besides bigotry. And I hope they don't railroad these guys if they weren't involved.

I think someone has an "issue" with the police....

I have no idea why we need to be cautious with the use of the word "terrorism."

Neither do I

Planting explosives and detonating them to kill innocent bystanders is terrorism. Whether it is carried out by Muslim ideological extremists connected with a terrorist organisation such as Al Quaeda, domestic right wing extremists connected with a rogue militia, or a lone operator with no connection with any organisation and nothing but an axe to grind, they are still terrorist acts, any way you slice it.

Ted Kaczynski (a.k.a. the unabomber) acted entirely alone and detonated 15 devices in eight states (plus one in an aircraft) over a period of 17 years. Surely he was a domestic terrorist?

My immediate superior told me today, following news of the bombing, that in my area we were less and less safe because there are more and more immigrants, apparently oblivious to the fact that my wife is an immigrant.

...and if they didn't check this lead out, and if it turns out these were the terrorists who planted the bombs, and they manage to escape the country, then people like you would likely be one of the first people to complain about Police incompetence.

In the FBI's press conference this morning, they said that they had gotten a tip about an "explosive device" in that apartment; and they also said they had cleared the apartment and its occupants and stopped investigating them last night.

Yeah, tip? Do you buy that?

I hope their neighbors are liberals.

If they had a real reason, I would be OK with it. Three young Arab looking students? Maybe they should search the apartments of all the Arabs/Persians on student visas? What do you call a lead?

No, I have an issue with the hundreds of people who have been proven innocent but who made false confessions under long police interrogations. It's a subject for another thread. Check out the Innocence Project if you actually care.

Edited to add link: False Confessions
In about 25% of DNA exoneration cases, innocent defendants made incriminating statements, delivered outright confessions or pled guilty.

These cases show that confessions are not always prompted by internal knowledge or actual guilt, but are sometimes motivated by external influences.
I like the police. I just want to see them better trained and using better protocols. There are a lot of false beliefs about confessions in police departments.
