Explosion at the Boston Marathon.

9:27 p.m.ET: Federal law enforcement officials will invoke the public safety exception to the Miranda law and not offer the suspect the right to remain silent during his interrogation, ABC News has learned. The exception is invoked in instances in which the public is at risk of a clear danger.
But assuming that everyone knows that they have a right to silence, what good does denying them that right do them? You can't force someone to speak, at least legally. Or is it just that saying something incriminating can still be used against you? Because I would have thought that would be quite unnecessary here.

Because Massachusetts does not have a death penalty, and I don't think (but IANAL) that the fed death penalty can override that. Also there may be alot of legal play ahead like Malvo did.

It can. None of MA's laws will have any play on this case.

It's possible if he agrees to plea guilty, they let him off, but I personally would be opposed to that, and the USG doesn't have to agree to any plea.

That state has 11 digit license plates?

Maybe it was a Euro plate, those things are pretty wide.
Then again... Given CNN's resent quality coverage, maybe they finally just said 'chuck it', lets go full on World News Daily crazy and report whatever pops into our heads.

They have to make them extra wide to fit "Commonwealth of Massachusetts" on there anyhow.

(No, not really.)

ETA: My guess is that the plate is actually something like "TRRST1" which might also explain why the DMV was willing to issue it.

I've asked more about this around elsewhere and I think you're right.

Well I'll be damned. I would've thought that he would've gutted himself a while ago, or at least tried to escape out some sneaky way. Talk about poor planning and sporadic action, idiots. With that being said, it should be a week or so before we get a full story. I'm very interested in the motivations.

I'm shocked that they got him alive. I didn't think he'd let himself be captured. Great job by law enforcement here.

I'd imagine that was the reason he let loose the auto weapon fire from inside the boat. Hoping the cops would seriously return fire, giving him that 'blaze of glory' moment. Glad they denied him that and took him alive.
