Explain Atheism to Justinian2

So this thread no longer has anything to do with explaining atheism then?

Atheism has nothing to do with sexual preferences or practises.

I've always preferred guys with shorter hair. My type is young, athletic, good looking - think college athlete and add a few years (if you must).
What a coincidence! That's my type too! :D

And if it is any consolation, Independent Scientology doesn't think that gays are at covert hostility on the tone scale. In fact, one tranvestite gave a large gift to independent Scientology.
You do know that quite a number of cross-dressers aren't gay, don't you?

Except that Justinian doesn't seem to really understand either concept very well.

Atheism is really simple, and has been explained to Justinian2 lots of times in this thread.

Natural selection is somewhat less simple and is off-topic but it is really interesting, and since Justinian2 has ventured an opinion that homosexuality is dying out as a human trait, it seemed more interesting to discuss that than to endlessly repeat that atheism is the absence of a belief in any gods.

I think it must be a little bit more complicated than one gene whose presence just defines gay or not gay.

If it was as simple as that, then the negative selection pressure of gay people's disinclination for straight sex would have remove the gene from the pool in a few generations.

I've read that gay men are disproportionately likely to have older brothers. Now that suggests a nurture rather than nature effect, but the claimed disproportion was not present if their older brother was adopted or was a step brother from a different mother. That suggests something rather more subtle about the interaction between a fetus and a mother who's previously carried a male fetus.

I think you've hit upon a plausible survival mechanism for homosexuality!

Talking about troops of monkeys now, if a gay monkey depletes the sperm of the biggest stud, then the gay monkey's brothers might be slightly more likely to impregnate the female monkeys.

It seems this thread has evolved to things in general that Justinian does not understand.

Such as atheism, or homosexuality, or evolution... You name it, he probably doesn't get it.

Quote:
"No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered as patriots. This is one nation under God."
-- George Bush

I didn't vote for him, by the way...

I understand that this quote comes from an uncorroborated source, but isn't it scary how so many people believe it's something he could have said, even if he didn't?

I've met a few people in the US who wonder why Bush was treated with contempt by many other countries, not realising we are those atheists he finds so offensive. But this is just the tip of the iceberg of course, for 'atheists' read 'atheists, moslems, hindus, jains, even scientologists', basically everyone who doesn't believe in Georgie-baby's own little fantasy is beneath his contempt. That's a dig at a lot of people.

Thank goodness for JREF, showing that the Bush clan and their blinkered morals are not totally representative of your wonderful country.

I thought the US had separation of church and state anyway? Would it have been legal/moral for him to be that offensive when he was president?

He keeps repeating that he grew up in a small, culturally isolated town. This may be true, but what's he been doing since then? Living at the North Pole? Wherever he was, he apparently got hit on by lots of gay guys (until he grew a mustache, because whoever heard of gay guys liking mustaches) and gorgeous big boobed women.

This was discussed in a UK TV program a while back. John Barrowman asked scientists to find out whether he was gay because of nature or nurture. From his website:

'The Making of Me' was a documentary broadcast on July 25th, 2008 on BBC1. It was John’s personal quest to find out if there was any scientific proof of his own personal belief that he was born gay, and that it was not a personal lifestyle choice or a result of his environment. Homosexuality is the archetypical nature versus nurture debate. Many people, including some sociologists and apologists for religious groups, in particular the Catholic Truth Society, claim that homosexuality is something people choose and can, conversely, reject. Others, including some of the scientists seen in this documentary, believe that homosexuality is genetic.
More info here: http://johnbarrowman.mypagerocks.com/makingofme.htm

Barrowman has an older brother, but there was a reference in the prog to homosexuality being higher among 3rd sons, during the program Barrowman called his mother as he thought there had been a miscarriage and discovered that the baby would have been a son.

My best friend was a 2nd son and was bi-sexual, his big bro was straight and his little bro gay. With only those two examples I'm not qualified to judge, but it was interesting to see the program, although the interview with a man who had been given 'therapy' on the 1970s to 'cure' his homosexuality was horrendous.

I havent read the thread, but I heard that someone actually used the term "chick-magnet" here????

bahahahahahhahahaha

There was a bar with a lot of prostitutes that I frequented occasionally on the way home from work when I was 35. They made me feel like a chick magnet as twenty or so would ask me if I wanted company before I finished my first drink. I went out with the ones that looked like super models a few times. Then the AIDs scare came and the fear of AIDs ruined my desire for $60 sex. $60 was pocket change for me at the time. Thank 'God' they all used condoms. I was only 1/2 clear at the time.

I've seen men that could have that effect in a normal bar. I wasn't one of them. I used to like to pretend I was a sex magnet. T'was fun before AIDs. Now I have all I can do to satisfy my younger wife.

Dear Penthouse,
I always thought the letters in your magazine were made up until...........

I think its more a case of

$cientology is a pretty cool guy. Eh trolls JREF and doesn't afraid of anything.

What's so strange and mysterious about homosexuality? Of the straight men I known (personally) some have a thing for boobs, some for thighs, some for feet (and shoes, oddly enough) and at least one for hair. That is where you get homosexuality from, and it's no more disgusting than a man wanting to 'worship' their wife's feet.

When a guy keeps trying to touch your genitals and keeps asking you out, it really doesn't take a high degree of inductive reasoning to deduce that the gay man is attracted to you. You don't have to be Sherlock Holmes.

Or, he was actually making fun of you, seeing your difficulty with both your own and your opposite sex (not nice, but some people do that). After all, most people need only be turned down a few times to get the message.

Or, the attraction was really mutual, but you have repressed it.

I take it that biology is not your strong side?

Or he's making stuff up based upon what buttons cause the most reaction when he pushes them.

Looks like you still do.
I was a 27 year old virgin that the gays treated like catnip and the girls ignored. A year later, after Scientology, the women started treating me like catnip. The irony is that Scientology made me stop acting macho. I became more gay to become a chick magnet. Women like a gay-like man that covets the female body.

Its neither a consolation nor the opposite. Frankly my friend, we don't give damn.
