Expanding Universe and the Red Shift

The way I see it, we're all hear to learn and/or to share our knowledge. I sincerely hope that ynot has learned a thing or two in this thread and has had his/her interest in the subject amplified, not dampened.

Absolutely so! And once again I thank everyone for the replies and advice.
As long as you promise to keep it secret . . . I'm a "his"

Good luck on the thesis defense, SpaceFluffer! I hope to reach that point myself someday. Someday....

SpaceFluffer - Congratulations on being nearly done with the Ph.D. I defended my dissertation nearly 16 years ago and remember too well what you've gone through. Don't be surprised if it is a bit anticlimactic. Take some time afterwards and treat yourself.

Firstly in the interest of full disclosure I should point out that I don't currently have a Ph.D., but will be defending my thesis in a few weeks.

Congratulations. My very best wishes for a tenure-track position for you; with your gifts for explanation, you deserve a chance to mold young minds.

After your first couple of postdocs, that is. :)

Yeah, good luck SpaceFluffer, I did my thesis defence a little over a year ago. Complexity is right, mine was incredibly anticlimactic, although it did have its' moments.

The worst feeling for me was when I'd handed over the final bound copies after I'd finished my corrections. I felt kind of lost and empty, like I'd just said goodbye to an old friend.

A few hours later I was in the Crazy House* with my mates out of my skull on beer and Smirnoff Ice, the blues of that afternoon completely forgotten. That was one hell of a good night!
