Executions

I've sometimes had the same thoughts about the condemned putting up a fight.

I also find it interesting how they'll keep a suicide watch on a condemned person, so they can end his life in a proper fashion.

Well, there is a slightly more legitimate reason for that than just ensuring the victim is killed by the state. Suicide attempts can result in lengthy hospital stays, up to and including persistent vegetative states where the state would have to pick up the tab. Plus, legally, only a reasonably healthy victim can be executed by the state.

This thread got me thinking: http://www.internationalskeptics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=124546&page=2

What if an innocent person, after exhausting his appeals, simply refused to cooperate with the execution? What if he put up a fight? Screamed? Would they force him into the execution chamber while screaming and fighting for his life?

Well I think a guilty person might behave the same way. With that being said, I think they would be dragged to execution. The fact that this doesn't happen often (or so we are told) leads me to believe that the condemed are probably offered a tranquilizer before going down the green mile.

I didn't catch this in the OP. But an innocent person wouldn't be on death row. :)

I have thought about the same thing as well. But i came to a conclusion about it a while ago.

One can fight, but one is going to have to fight their absolute hardest to get away. Meaning attacking anyone attempting to subdue them with lethal intent. This isn't a situation a few real potatoes ( hard punches) could remedy.

Your best case scenario, really the only one that would lead to a chance of getting away, is wresting a weapon away from one of the guards. Now once you have done this, the guards, in self defense can kill you.

So one is going to have to be a fighter of Rorshac esque ability in order to pull this off, and still, probably going to get a loud bang and eternal silence for their efforts.

as long as they were actually not the murderer or were but the victim deserved it (my standards of course:D) I'm ok if they take some with them.

They'd release the videotape later so it can be turned into a pay-per-view event for those people in the audience of the Republican debate that cheered on the concept of killing people.

Prison guards don't carry guns. I guess a person could try to grab a baton, handcuffs or a radio but I don't see the guards beating someone to death with them in self defense.

Prisons deal with uncooperative inmates all the time. They would send in the special riot team to deal with you. You would likely be pepper sprayed and tased, manhandled to the floor, shackled hand and foot, and carried to the execution chamber.

Hubby and I were talking. The fighting we'd do wouldn't be to get away. There is no getting away. The fighting would be our last, futile act of protest. They may be taking my not-guilty life away from me, they may be actually murdering me, but I won't go quietly. I will scream and thrash and tell them I did not do this until I can't scream and thrash anymore.

I would not scream or thrash. I would quietly and without warning lunge at the nearest person (or whoever I decide is easiest to reach) and do my damnedest to bite his throat out. No futile protests -- if the state is going to murder me, I take at least one executioner with me.

Would it be tasteless to ask posters how long they think it will be before the death penalty is abolished in the USA?

Rolfe.
