Article that is interesting: "Even the Maya are getting sick of the 2012 hype."

MEXICO CITY - Apolinario Chile Pixtun is tired of being bombarded with frantic questions about the Mayan calendar supposedly "running out" on Dec. 21, 2012. After all, it's not the end of the world.

Or is it?

Definitely not, the Mayan elder insists. "I came back from England last year and, man, they had me fed up with this stuff."

And:

...Bernal notes there are other inscriptions at Maya sites for dates far beyond 2012 — including one that roughly translates into the year 4772.

So much for 2012 being the end of the world.

And anyway, the Maya in the drought-stricken Yucatan peninsula have bigger worries than 2012.

"If I went to some Mayan-speaking communities and asked people what is going to happen in 2012, they wouldn't have any idea," said Jose Huchim, a Yucatan Mayan archaeologist. "That the world is going to end? They wouldn't believe you. We have real concerns these days, like rain."

Interesting take on things from the Mayan perspective. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33261483/ns/technology_and_science-science//

Unfortunately, denials of the hype to the entire world from now until 2012 will not stop the onslaught.

Sad but true.

Also from the article:

And while fascinated by ancient lore, advocates seldom examine more recent experiences with apocalypse predictions.

"No one who's writing in now seems to remember that the last time we thought the world was going to end, it didn't," says Martin, the astronomy Webmaster. "There doesn't seem to be a lot of memory that things were fine the last time around."

Funny, that.

It's all for profit

"Disproving" these guys is like trying to "disprove" car sales.

I think a lot of folks are going to have egg on their faces on january first, 2013. I'm looking forward to hearing the excuses.

Either that or some New Age group will organize a few thousand people into a group meditation to save the planet... and claim it worked.

ETA: Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure that's happened before, too, or some variation of the same.

To me, the irony here is that the Mayan people themselves seem to think it's bunk, at least according to this particular Mayan elder, who seemed in a good position to know. This was news to me.

That being the case, how stupid do people have to be to believe in a Mayan prophecy that the Mayan people themselves don't believe?

its about $3 stupid, that the average price of a 2012 doomsday book from amazon
;)

Ah, but it's not exactly a Mayan prophecy. It's a bunch of nonsense made up by people who don't exactly have a good grip on reality.

We have one of the main guys living here and preparing his compound for the End Times. He's written a book. It starts out stating that the reason that we experience Summer is because the Earth is closer to the Sun at that time. (Don't tell the Bad Astronomer. He'll have a heart attack.) The scientific accuracy does not get appreciably better as the book progresses.

Well, I knew some people who spend the 2nd half of the '90s swearing that the Y2K bug was going to destroy society, Bill Clinton was going to declare martial law, make himself dictator for life, and declare war on American citizens, etc. I mean they were seriously SERIOUSLY into this stuff. They had videos and books and magazine and supplies, all for survival, plans drawn out, camped all the time to get used to it, everything. Very shortly before 12/31/99 I saw one of them and I was like, "uhhh, soooo . . . " and he just said "it's not gonna happen."

I suspect the 2012 people will be a lot like that.

In fact, come 2013, you're going to be able to find very, very few people who admit to ever having believed "that 2012 nonsense."
