EU to help China invade Taiwan

If Alaska and the rest of the US had a political difference, would it be appropiate to settle it through invading Alaska? I don't see how this "part of their country" business is all that important. How does being "part of their country" give them the right to tell them what to do? Would mainland China take seriously the idea that Taiwan should be able to tell them what to do? According to this "same country" argument, doesn't Taiwan have just as much right to take over the mainland as vice versa?

This reminds me of a political cartoon I saw in the early days of Russia's perestroika. It showed military commanders from Soviet bloc countries such as Romania and Czechoslovakia, discussing the developments and one mutters, "if this keeps up we're going to have to send tanks in."

Considering it would largely be a naval engagement, I don't see any conflict with current deployments.

It wasn't the manpower I was thinking of but the cost of another war. We're supposedly running through over $4 billion a month in Iraq, with a record budget deficit projected to be $427 billion this year. Playing battleship with China would be expensive.

Yes, but not nearly as much as it would later on should they decide to "re-unify" someone else.

China has a motivated, large and competent armed forces, as distinct to Iraq that was largely the opposite in all respects. China has a massive trade with the rest of the world. Australia has already said that, despite ANZUS, it would not back the US in a conflict over the issue.

Alexander Downer let the cat out of the bag when he said we wouldn't, then had the PM say we would. The fact is, Australia wouldn't want a war, and China is (IIRC), if not our biggest trading partner, well on the may to being our biggest cash cow (which with our current account deficit the way it is, something we desperately need). Australia may or may not, who knows really, we are trying to appease both sides. The initial statement by Downer, however, indicates what balance is uppermost in his mind.
