EU, EU, EU - out, out, out

It's not really possible, as the recent mess should illustrate. Europe is simply too heterogenous for that to be feasible in the foreseeable future.

That's very unfortunate but understandable. A federated Europe may not be practical, but one would hope, at least from an American perspective, that the EU would remain a legitimate organization. The EU is a precedent, in that, it is the first continental union in European history to not involve conquerors or bloodshed.

very simple, lack of direct Democracy is a lack of Democracy for me. this is why i regard the Swiss confederation incompatible with the EU.

Ah, fair enough. Since the Treaty of Lisbon EU has the mechanism for European Citizens' Initiative where one million EU citizens can together propose new EU legislation to the Commission:

The initiative enables one million EU citizens, who are nationals of at least one quarter of the Member States, to call directly on the European Commission to propose a legal act in an area where the Member States have conferred powers onto the EU level.[1] This right to request the Commission to initiate a legislative proposal puts citizens on the same footing as the EP and the Council, who enjoy this right according to Art. 225 and 241 TFEU, respectively.

I like it, as it does promote direct democracy within the EU, but true that it is not what you guys have in Switzerland.
