Eric Hovind, a chip off the old block

Trouble in the creationist "education" scene. Even Hovind disagrees with the young Earth creationist "college" Eric went to.

Created and Made
By Kent Hovind

While my son was in Jackson Hole Bible College one of his teachers began teaching a modified version of the gap theory/day-age theory. My son was torn up by the confusion it caused in his mind so I wrote this letter to help him see the subject clearly.
...
Had I known that the school there had a teacher that taught the ruin restoration theory I would never have suggested that you or anyone else go there. I know how impressionable young minds are and how difficult it is to undo damage that has been done by false teaching. ...

Maybe Hovind should work out problems that plague creation before he tries to take on all of science.

Strangely enough Buddy Davis's biography is missing any part about his education.

Something tells me that [evil, secular] education is... shall we say... not a high priority for him.

Come to think of it, wasn't he the guy in "Jesus Camp" who was singing that stupid "Behemoth" song to the kids?

Eric Hovind's understanding of science:

Coleman talks about creationism
Angela E. Lackey, Midland Daily News

Eric Hovind’s motto is simple – he is against lies and for truth. "I want to talk about evolution. Things that just don’t add up," Hovind said.
...
Hovind used the Grand Canyon as his first example. The creationist interpretation states the canyon was created with lots of water in little time. The evolutionist view states it was created with a little bit of water over a long period of time.
...
Next he tackled the idea of a geologic column, which was introduced in the 1800s. The evolution theory states geologic columns have several layers, including sediment and index fossils, that are millions of years old. But, he pointed out, carbon dating wasn’t used until the mid-20th century. He said the columns do not exist.
...
The meeting drew local television coverage, which raised issues about having intelligent design in the school. . . .

And if it's so easy for something like the Grand Canyon to be formed, how come we haven't seen anything like it formed withing the span of recorded history? Which, according to Hovind, would be all of history.

Know what I suggest? He needs to be ENCOURAGED to make more and more outlandish statements. The worse they get, and the sillier they get, the better. Keep pushing him to make a complete and utter dolt of himself in public, and cover it with mainstream media. So that he implants the vision "Hovind = barking lunatic" on the public consciousness. Make sure he gets a giant indelible red "L" tattooed on his forehead! ;)

Clearly he is not able to be educated up to a normal person's standard - that ship has sailed. The only other options are to ignore him (i.e. tacitly allow him to grow his support base), or encourage him to repeatedly make the most humungous fool of himself in public. No-one likes a loser!

I was reading on some fundamentalist forums, and found out other interesting aspects about Eric. Fundamentalists, even in his own area, don't have a high opinion of him.

Example:
1998 MM 022487 A. HOVIND, ERIC MICHAEL Defendant MISDEMEANOR 7/26/1998 CLOSED

Offense Statute Charge Description Lvl/Deg Citation
810.09(2A) TRESPASSING-PROPERTY NOT STRUCTURE OR CONVEY First Degree Misdemeanor

This supposedly has something to do with Pensacola Christian College.

In addition, Eric likes to drive. He proudly mentions, "I bought my first car when I was 12 and made $300. Following a wreck, I once had 36 stitches in my mouth." I found mention about Hovind's license problems at "Hovind Crime family" @ at the t.o. forums. That post refers to:

4 2000 CT 000157 A HOVIND , ERIC MICHAEL Defendant CRIMINAL TRAFFIC 2/8/2000 CLOSED

1/27/2000 322.03(1) NO VALID DRIVERS LICENSE 874819-F

Kent Hovind has a brother, Ross E. Hovind (born 1949), who also likes motocycles. Hovind sent a newsletter out to get people to send his brother gifts:

My brother Ross was very influential in bringing me to Christ over 37 years ago. He is now retired from public school teaching and has a new Harley-Davidson which has definitively given him a “Harleyer than thou” attitude. (Just kidding!) He has become consumed with Harley fever and now ministers to many through his Christian motorcycle club. He is also collecting the Harley “dip dots” (to put on his map) from dealers all over the world. They cost anywhere from $0-$4. I would like to get him one from every dealer in the world to show my appreciation to him for bringing me to the Lord. If you have a Harley dealer near you, and our ministry has touched your life, and you would be willing to get him one, please send it to him with a letter explaining how CSE has helped you, so Ross can get a small taste of what awaits him in Glory. I think we will all be amazed at the “ripple effect” from each of our efforts for Him. His address is Ross Hovind, [address removed by Questioninggeller], Groveland, IL 61535. Thanks

What's going on with Eric Hovind now? He's now a business-religious man.

In November 2007, God Quest Inc. filed for a fictitious business name of CSE with Florida. God Quest Inc. was incorporated by Eric Hovind, Bill Nadolny, and Stephen Lawwell in July 2007.

Here are some MP3s of Eric Hovind speaking at First Baptist Church of Benson, Arizona on 08/17/08:

1) Truth on Creation Fair - Session Five (PM Service)
2) Truth on Creation Fair - Session Four (AM Service)
3) Truth on Creation Fair - Session Three (Sunday School)
4) Truth on Creation Fair - #2 of Session Two (Live)
5) Truth on Creation Fair - #1 of Session Two (Live)
6) Truth on Creation Fair - Session One (via webcam)

Besides the simple fact that he has no claims of substance, Eric is definitely not an effective speaker. I did find it interesting when Eric said, "We are all a bunch of lying thieves." Maybe that explains the high priced videos packed with lies that the Hovind's sell. Or maybe he was referring to why his father is in prison.

Note in part 1 he admits he was good at "faking Christianity" by just telling people what they want to hear. Then says he's trying some "brain washing techniques" and moves into some common creationist lies. All-in-all, pretty boring.

Eric Hovind is a liar too

Eric Hovind is a liar just like his father. Without even going into his misrepesentations of science, look at his defense of Kent Hovind. Eric's legal update, authored and signed by Eric, is quoted below in which he defends his father with lies:

Eric Hovind's legal update said:
Letter from Eric Hovind
...
Q: What were the accusations against Dr. Hovind and what was his defense?

A:

1. Failure to withhold employee-related taxes:

Explanation:
From the start of the ministry, Dr. Hovind sought legal counsel on the proper way to compensate those who would serve with him in the ministry. He was told by several attorneys that as a 508 organization, CSE was not required to withhold taxes and that each person serving would be responsible for paying their own income taxes. For seventeen years the ministry operated without incident, and no notice was ever given to CSE or Dr. Hovind that the IRS wanted any changes made on this issue until the day the charges were brought.
...

The following quote is from the court that heard and denied Kent's appeal (you can read it at http://www.ca11.uscourts.gov/unpub/ops/200710090.pdf )

Eleventh Circuit Court said:
...
The government proved that Kent knew the tax laws required the collection and payment of withholding taxes, but he refused to comply. Employees of Evangelism Enterprises, peers, and legal counsel testified that Kent disputed the authority of the Internal Revenue Service based on the separation of the church and state, debated the interpretation and application of the withholding requirements, and intentionally characterized Evangelism Enterprises as a “church” and his employees as “missionaries” to avoid tax obligations. Kent had opined to attorney David Gibbs that he was “smarter” than other church officials who had forfeited real property after they refused to collect or pay withholding taxes. Although Kent argued at trial that he was ignorant of the law and the Revenue Service failed to identify a law that required him to collect and pay withholding taxes, the jury was entitled to find that Kent knew about and deliberately violated the tax laws. See United States v. Lankford, 955 F.2d 1545, 1550 (11th Cir. 1992).
...

Back to Eric's claims:

Eric Hovind's legal update said:
2. Structuring cash transactions in order to evade bank reporting requirements:

Explanation:
Up until 2003, CSE withdrew cash in order to compensate those who served at CSE. There was no knowledge of bank secrecy laws and never any intention of evading Internal Revenue Service regulations.

That is another Eric Hovind flat out lie.

Eleventh Circuit Court said:
...
A former employee of Evangelism Enterprises, Brian Popp, testified that Kent knew of and complained about the bank reporting requirements and that Jo, often at Kent’s direction, regularly obtained cash to pay employees of the organization. Other employees and associates of Kent testified that the Hovinds openly disputed the validity of the tax laws.
...

Eric claims:

Eric Hovind's legal update said:
3. Threatening and impeding the investigation of a government agency:

Explanation:
Because Dr. Hovind filed papers questioning actions of the IRS, which was his legal right, he was charged with "impeding" the agency. They also believed he "threatened agents with bodily harm" by praying for those involved on public radio.

This is a lie for many, many reasons including him falsely declaring bankrupcy and threatening investigators (or just listen to his jail house recordings laced with threats). But just to show that Eric lied-misrepresented the real issues, I'll quote Kent Hovind's advisor from a report in a conservative paper:

'Government persecuting' jailed creation evangelist
Kent Hovind built celebrated anti-evolution ministry, now serving 10-year prison sentence on tax charges
WorldNutDaily
Posted: May 31, 2009
...
Lindsey Springer, the founder of an IRS watchdog group who has advised Hovind, argues Hovind merely insists that the federal government adhere to the Constitution and its own laws, which protect religion and religious entities.
...
Springer conceded that on a radio broadcast, Hovind did pray that God would "smite" the IRS, which was interpreted as a threat.

Springer also said Hovind made a mistake when he didn't acquire a permit to erect a building, based on the argument it was church property.
...

Then below Hovind's posting he asks for "donations" for his father's defense and to further their "mission."

Why does anyone believe the Hovinds for any facts on anything?

Here is a July 11, 2009 interview with Eric Hovind conducted by wing-nut "Prophecy teacher" Jimmy DeYoung:

http://media.prophecytoday.com/interviews/hovind-7-11-09.mp3

Eric says that his father is his hero because Kent "stands by his convictions" (I guess he doesn't mean the 58 felony convictions). Notice how the host and Eric don't discuss what Kent is doing now or why Eric is now stepping in for his father. Instead they discuss his appearance on Trinity Broadcast Network just to criticize other Christians. I looked at Eric's schedule and he only has two appearances book for the entire year of 2009, which I guess shows that even creationists are sick of this huckster. That is even something the conservative radio hosts in the Eric Hovind vs Michael Shermer debate said.

I'd like to hear an interview where Eric Hovind explains his racism, but I doubt the fundie hosts have enough guts to ask about that since they can't even bring themselves to discuss the Hovind crime family legal problems.
