Eric Cantor loses primary

Obama is imo a marxist.

I am a communist. In my opinion, Obama is the moderate conservative I wanted John Huntsman to be. Early in the Republican primary, when he was the only sane man, I wanted to give him a pity vote. Of course, that didn't last.

Apparently I gave Obama the pity vote for being the only rational conservative candidate.

And it's not changing. The Republicans are continuing to be more and more crazy. Cantor was already an excessively conservative loon, but he's being kicked out for not being far enough to the right. The Republicans are moving everyone, even their former heroes, further to the left by their own increasing lunacy.

...
Sorry you accept such strange bedfellows.

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2014/06/12/remembering_communisms_toll_122952.html

There were millions of victims of communism, and humans suffered in dozens of nations on almost every continent. Still, when I think of the evils of communism, I think first of a particular place and time: Hungary, 1956.

I was a graduate student at the Sorbonne in Paris that fall, studying French literature and history, attending class now and again but doing most of my research in the cafes and clubs of the Left Bank.

And then in late October Hungarian students my own age launched a revolution in the streets of Budapest that within a few days brought down the communist government and set Hungary on a path toward freedom and democracy. At least, we thought so.

I cheered the awesome bravery of the young Hungarians who inspired a nation and forced the communist leadership to step down. But my joy was short-lived. On November 4, Moscow moved to crush the Hungarian Revolution.

I saw the photos of students -- Freedom Fighters -- battling the invading Soviet troops and tanks with World War I rifles and Molotov cocktails. I heard their voices on AM radio. Calling for help. Calling on America to hear them; to save them.

I waited in vain for the U.S. government to take action. But the only response was words, a pro forma UN resolution. Budapest was far away, apparently, and the Soviets meant business, murderous business.

We must not forget the victims and the crimes of communism. We must continue to tell the truth about Tiananmen Square and the Gulag and the Isle of Pines and the killing fields of Cambodia and the boat people of Vietnam.

Let us resolve that never again will we allow so evil a tyranny as communism to terrorize and subjugate the peoples and nations of the world.

Cantor didn't lose because he wasn't anti-tax or anti-government enough. He lost, besides the local poor campaign stuff, for being willing to work with Dems on any issue. The big one was immigration reform. Being willing to do the work of government and compromise is against the Tea Party ideals, whose stated goals have never been as important as the things they claim to deny.

Is this the same Eric Cantor who wanted to build a militarized fence on the border with Mexico? The same Eric Cantor who received a 100% rating from FAIR?

Eric Cantor lost because he pretended to represent a party of small government, while doing exactly the opposite.

Here is an interesting analysis of how people view themselves on the political scale which suggests why Cantor lost.

To me it shows the Conservative fringe is more mainstream then many would admit.

Conservatives put themselves at 7.4 on the 1-to-9 scale—that is, closer to the extremist edge than to the center by almost a whole point (.8).

Polaris related "racism and fascism" to "guns, abortion, and God". I dispute the connection.

Chief Justice Taney's opinion in the Dred Scott case relates to equal treatment before the law (i.e., to racism). Mussolini relates to "fascism" (duh!).

Hell if I did - that was all on you, muchacho.

Oh?
... The liberal posters here think that the Tea Party is some sort of racist, fascist movement, but I think of it as more libertarian. ...
This statement would hold more water if they hadn't been going on about guns, abortion and God, etc., for the last few years.
It appears to me that you defend the characterization of the Tea Party by "liberal posters" as a "racist, fascist movement" "going on about guns, abortion, and God", in rebuttal to sunmaster's characterization of the Tea Party as "more libertarian" and supportive of limits on immigration.

Edit: Update: basically ...
Sunmaster writes "Not-A and B"
Polaris: "No".
Not-(Not-A and B) => A or Not-B.

Now there are rumors that Cantor's religon (he is Jewish) might have played a role in his defeat. I hope this is not true.

I couldn't agree more, and wowza has it reached epic proportions on this forum. The frequency and arbitrariness of the accusations of racism towards those not adhering to their particular dogma has rendered the word meaningless.

Just as the right has rendered the words "Tyrant" and "Dictator" meaningless.

If you can't follow what's going on, you should consider not posting.
If you cannot conduct a civil discussion, you should consider not posting.
The meme spouted by conservatives on this board is the crazy attitudes from the right are only the fringe. The reality is much much different.
Stripped of slurs, this makes sense when rephrased as "some ideas called 'fringe' are not, in fact fringe but are commonplace". That last is a straight answer to my question. I expected to get there eventually, after cutting through the slurs. Thanks for confirming my expectations.

The relations between ideological polarization of the electorate, electoral results, legislative functioning, and policy are interesting topics. Also interesting is the extent to which negative publicity and broadcast lies can influence an election.

"War is politics by other means."
"The first casualty of war is truth."

They aren't necessarily connected, it just happens that many of the "guns, abortion and God" proponents are racist.
Do you have any statistical support for this? Some people whose Social Security numbers end in "5" are racist. Some people with blood type A+ are racist. So what?

The GOPs whole line this election "Don't worry, folks,we have the crazies in the party under control" just went up the creek over the last week.

And that Brat won primarily on the Immigratation issue will scare off any action on immigrataion reform, which will alienate the Hispanic voters even more from the GOP.

GOP might well have some temporary sucess, but they have real, deep, problems and seem unable to fix them. And in the long run all the gerry mandering in the world will not help them.

Am I the only one who is relishing the irony that the Republican party's crazy gerrymandering in 2010 has now come back to bite them?

I mean, just as the GOP was getting on message and it looked like the Tea Party was receding, this happens.
