In the latest developments on Tuesday, the government fired more than 15,000 employees at the education ministry ... (read on )

You'd almost think this was a ready-made way of Erdogan getting rid of all dissent.

Not that an honest bloke like him would do that.

How long before Erdogan tells the US he wants them to stop using his airfields to fight ISIS? Then goes on full attack against Kurdish groups, then Syria, then raises the black flag?

Then loses the "mildly" qualifier in front of "Islamist" in the Economist?

Anyone with a name that wouldn't be out of place in the Lord of the Rings gets big ups in my book.

Yes - watch this space.

And I can't think he's done his EU membership application much good. Living in the country slightly to the W of Turkey I feel a tiny bit less comfortable than a few days ago.

I wonder if he'll cop some 'attitude' about refugees passing through Turkey?

* Oh, OK .... ;)

As regards the disloyal army personnel, perhaps Erdogan could follow the example of his predecessor Mahmud II and arrange an Auspicious IncidentWP.

The irony with "Erdogan" is that it sounds pretty Armenian....
No. It is perfectly in accord with the Turkish Surname LawWP of 1934, which forbade the use of the Armenian name ending
The surname law also forbade certain surnames that contained connotations of foreign cultures, nations, tribes, and religions. New surnames had to be taken from the Turkish language. The surname could be used with the -oğlu ending, and it was forbidden to use Armenian endings such as -yan, Slavic endings such as -of (or -ov), -vich, -ic, Greek endings such as -is, -dis, -pulos, -aki, Persian endings such as -zade, and Arab endings such as -mahdumu, -veled, and -bin, ‘referring to other ethnicities or taken from another language.’

Wait, I thought Turkey joining the E.U. was a scare tactic the Leave camp used.

The irony is, whilst the Beeb pronounce the name as 'Erdo-w-an', in line with Turkish pronunciation (albeit after a shaky start with the female newsreader with the Irish brogue [???] calling him, 'Erdogan', she still persists in giving 'Gulen' a hard 'G'. Or is it the newsreaders saying 'Wulen', the ones in the wrong?

Turkey have long wanted to be a member of the EU and implemented a lot of reforms to put them in line with EU standards such as abolishing the death penalty. Erdogan may decide he prefers to exercise his "sovereignty" rather than put up with those pesky regulations.

It's getting to a point where I would find it hard to see the EU accepting Turkey as long as Erdogan is in power. He's accumulating political power to a point where he could ostensibly comply with a lot of regulations while still ruling as he sees fit.

The Americans sent their dependents home from military bases in turkey back in March. If the Americans were sensing seismic disturbances, Erdogan and his inner circle saw more.

So, they made a plan, on what to do and how to do it when the next coup attempt happens.

A coup attempt happened.
The had a plan.
They executed it.

Not Rocket Science.

There's no point in letting a good crisis go to waste.
