Empire State Building shooting

Are the number of shootings increasing? Seems to have been a few recently

9000+ shooting *murder* (does not even count wounded) per year so 3 or 4 are statistical noise.

If anything I suspect sucvh shooting happenned as much as previously but due to the "joker" shooting are simply over reported by the news.

Use of guns did allow us to free ourselves 100-200 years sooner than most European nations. Most of it within living memory.

You take the good with the bad.

DIstance from UK, and the fact you were helped a bit, made you free yourself earlier than other nation which did not have that luxury. Sure you did a great job, but please don't overlook the great advantage you had.

I'm proud of my city, we have shootings all the time but don't make a huge fuss about them. People in New York City really do think they're the most important people and everyone should be interested in them all the time.

That's not to mention the, *ahem* French contribution. :boxedin:

The British and many others learned a hard lesson with that war. There is more money in responsible rule than oppressive tyranny.

Really ? I realise that the Revolutionary War plays out differently in the United States and forms part of a wider creation myth about the country. UK versions of that same war are also unreliable and very biased. I think it's a huge overreach to somehow think that the Revolutionary War completely changed the way in which the British Empire behaved and that other countries somehow learned along with that.

Looking at the way in which the British behaved in the other parts of their empire I think one conclusion you could perhaps draw is that the experience of the Revolutionary War shows that rather than having a colony in which the colonists think that they should have influence over the mother country, make it quite clear that they are vassal states who are expected to provide money, raw materials and a market for manufactured goods and that they should not to have any influence at home at all.

The Revolutionary war was, at about that time, a very big deal for what was to become the United States and a big deal for Britain and France. I don't think many other countries were paying much attention.

Looking up I find 9000+ murder by fire arm, 30000 suicide in total, 60% being by firearm so 9000+30000*0.6=27000 reasonably near the number he provided.

He also said "30000 death" not "30000 murder".

Obviously "completely" is overselling it... but the Durham report in the 1830's (which resulted from the War of Independence and later unrest in Canada) did lead to the British Government adopting a policy of responsible self-governance in some colonies (i.e. Canada, Australia, New Zealand).

Isn't the number of suicides less of an issue though? Seems like the focus should be on murder...

Agree 100%, and I'm off topic.

As a gun owner: suicides, like homicides have the same issue with guns: without them both would continue to exist, but with guns they are a hell of a lot easier.

Empire State Building shootings wounds 11, killing 2, police say

A construction worker followed the suspect and alerted officers. The suspect, using a .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun, then fired on police and they returned fire, killing him, said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

Most of the injuries apparently occurred during the exchange of gunfire, and some may have been hit by shots fired by police officers, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

Yeah may not want to say that to anyone on the reciving end of the british empire. Imperial brits were not nice people. On the other hand they would probably have won the american war of indepdence.

It is the media. They jump on anything they think is interesting and tend to dramatize it to gain viewership.

Not exactly. Workplace shootings are fairly new. You don't seem them much before the 80s.

Explanations range from working conditions for americans getting worse to the fact that high profile coverage of such shootings has put the idea o

Bloomberg took advantage of the situation to say, "There are a lot of guns out there." True of course, but irrelevant as only one gun was used by the perp here.

Of course its relivant. The fewer guns there are around the more that will be in the hands of rich weapon nerds and the the fewer that will be in the hands of criminals. When was the last time you heard of someone being shot with a Webley-Fosbery Automatic Revolver?
