Shootings reported in front of Empire State Building

A gunman believed to be responsible in the shooting of at least five people in front of the Empire State Building in New York was shot and killed by police, New York police said.

Authorities converged on the building around 9 a.m. after reports of gunfire.

A witness told CNN's Rose Arce that the gunman ran after and shot a man in the head. An unarmed guard chased the gunman away, the witness told Arce.

Additional details were not immediately available.

Apparently 10 shot by a person with a shotgun. Shooter killed by NYPD.

Are the number of shootings increasing? Seems to have been a few recently

Gotta love the "critial thinkers" on Free Republic.

Empire State Building area:

Woman witness: “young boy - a white boy.”

[an employment incident - shooter was FIRED TODAY - went and got firearm - in Mayor Bloomberg’s NYC]

- Right before the RNC Convention......

“Not terrorism.....” Really?

(Muslim Hassan at Fort Hood [he was on Obama’s “Transition Team” with Stephanie Cutter - she is now a top Obama WH campaign advisor] is still not called “a terrorist” - just “workplace violence”)

The NYPD Cops were on “anti-terrorism duty”

In Mayor Bloomberg’s anti-gun NYC?

Where do young white men get these firearms so easily?

These “workplace incidents are suddenly piling up fast -

“Changing the subject” for Obama as the clock ticks for Romney/Ryan

OWS? Anarchist/Commie?

-

I am hearing the cops knew that Holmes was a nutcase before the Batman movie shootings

That three (3) shrinks at the Colorado University knew Holmes (a white “terrorist”) was making threats

- Holmes’ defense attorneys are blocking release of Holmes’ “notebook” which is said to detail his plan of attack in the theater.

Of course this gem comes amidst a slew of comments claiming this will be yet another gun ban opportunity because of Emmanuel's "never let a good crisis go to waste" remark.

Good question. Has there been an increase in mass shootings, or is this a "Summer of the Shark" media frenzy?

That's what I'm wondering - or maybe I'm reading USA politics section more than I used to!

Watching a NYPD news conference right now. They say Jeffery Johnson a disgruntled former employee of Hazan confronted and murdered a former co-worker then fled. A construction worker followed Johnson and alerted two policemen. The police officers confronted Johnson who fired at them and was killed.

It appears that nine bystanders were wounded in the crossfire and are at the hospital with non-life threatening wounds.

Use of guns did allow us to free ourselves 100-200 years sooner than most European nations. Most of it within living memory.

The pride of doing that early should be lessened by the knowledge that it was a bloody conflict.

Here in Canada, We got our independance via signatures, not guns. ;)

It is the media. They jump on anything they think is interesting and tend to dramatize it to gain viewership.

Bloomberg took advantage of the situation to say, "There are a lot of guns out there." True of course, but irrelevant as only one gun was used by the perp here.

The British and many others learned a hard lesson with that war. There is more money in responsible rule than oppressive tyranny.

You take the good with the bad.

Non sequitur. There were plenty of guns sloshing around Spain in the 1930s but it didn't facists coming to power.

Even if the power of the gun enabled the patriots to throw off the yoke of British oppression, it doesn't necessarily follow that guns are still required today to maintain the democracy that was created.

As someone who lives in a European country with tight gun laws and a stable constitutional monarchy it doesn't hold that guns are required to prevent a tyrannical government coming to power - and having a well-armed civilian population doesn't necessarily prevent your country from being invaded by an external tyrannical power.

I do agree however that the 30,000+ gun deaths annually is a consequence of the combination of the United States' access to and attitude to guns.

If a sufficiently large proportion of the U.S. population are prepared to accept the consequences then I guess that access to and attitudes to guns will not change any time soon.

And now Bloomberg has an excuse to ban people being in the way of bullets.

Where are you getting your numbers? That sounds more like Brasil than the US.
