Did you mean "Britney"?

Entirely possible. Pop Tart star that had boob job and apparent lobotomy before the age of consent? Had a Vegas wedding and divorce when sloshed; remarried, and showed -8 braincells regarding cars and kids. May be resurrecting career due to shortage of onscreen jiggle?

Certain celebrities are impossible to not have at least heard of, even if one avoids the major network news and the "entertainment" programs entirely. I'm not sure how the name is spelled--that would require interest on my part.

Ditto.

Though, I would still like to shake her hand, someday.
Me too.

Yeah, that sounds like Britney.

Emily was advised not to read what's been written here. I can see why now. I will advise the same.

A So I'm not surprised she wanted a friend to accompany her to TAM7. She is anything but a timid traveler.

"Friend= mama" No one was keeping her from bringing a friend, other than she expected some one else to pay for that friend. I pay for myself and my sons, and part of my registration fee goes towards paying for the guest speakers. I don't think it's fair to ask for the registrants to also pay for the guest's friends or parents. It's a stretch financially for most people as it is.

She would have been welcomed into the group. If she can't deal with a bit of criticism, she will not make it in the real world.

At 22, I had earned my engineering degree and was traveling on business. Alone. My employer would have laughed himself silly if I had asked for them to pay for my mom or a friend to go with me.

Methinks Mom needs to do a little less protecting, keeping her grown daughter from reading forums.

Precisely.

I think it was perfectly reasonable for Emily to ask the JREF to bring her mother.

It was also perfectly reasonable for the JREF to say "no."

I also have a bone to pick with some of the comments Emily has made.

Emily, if you're going to criticize TAM for being too expensive, perhaps it would be best not to do so after demanding that the JREF pay for your mother to come with you. It doesn't exactly help with the "expensive" part to pay for another guest.

This thread reminds me of when people started bashing the Southpark creators for possibly not having been skeptical enough on some occasion. Cleon is completely right here, nobody did anything wrong. Nothing particularly interesting about some speaker being canceled. Perfectly understandable if she didn't want to go alone. Not because it would be dangerous, but if you've never been to TAM you might think it could be lonely to turn up without knowing anybody (dead wrong, but how would she know!). And yes, TAM costs a lot of money. Which could be remedied by hosting it in some big mud pit where people could live in tents, but unfortunately that would probably exclude as many skeptics as the cost currently does. Though it would be great with a mud pit TAM too, for all the 22-year-old skeptics out there.

I'm just getting an allergic reaction when people start bringing out the pitchforks just because some more or less well known skeptic turns out to be possibly less than perfectly perfect. Why can't we judge people by the good things they do, adjust for truly awful or criminal misdeeds, and just ignore the normal human flaws and weaknesses that really don't matter?
