Well...
My solar system isolates from the grid, when the grid goes down.
This means that I can continue to run the house off the battery, and charge my car off the solar panels, when the grid is down.
These days, I only charge the car once the house battery is full (9 kWh) and then fill up the car battery (10 kWh).
I'm impressed with the engineering of the system, it waits for one minute after the grid comes back on, to make sure that the grid is stable, before re-connecting.
So far, I've been notified that the grid has gone down three times since the system was installed at the end of August.
That's three power failures that I've avoided already.
Between the solar system, rainwater system, the car, and my 'camping' stoves, I feel quite defended against storm outages.
Note that I was able to drive home quite happily in the famous 8 hour blackout.
A lot of vehicles were abandoned on the side of the road, because petrol stations can't pump petrol, without power.
It still feels like I have the best of both worlds, with my PHEV.
I always have a couple of tins of petrol in the boat shed, to power my 5 HP chipper/shredder.
Worst case, I could fall back on those in an emergency.
