Wholesale egg prices have eclipsed record levels as the U.S. scrambles to contain a bird-flu outbreak — and consumers may soon see more sticker shock at their local grocer as a result, according to analysts.

On Friday, average wholesale prices for large, white shell eggs reached $8 a dozen, beating the previous record by a large degree, according to data from Expana, which tracks agricultural commodity prices.

$8 a dozen?? Really? And wholesale? What is the retail price?

I'm a little shocked because I just bought eggs at the grocery store this morning. I live in Japan, so it's different, but I'm an American and I know (roughly) the exchange rate. I just dug out my receipt to check what I paid for them. It was 239 yen for 10 (they come in packages of 10 here, not 12).

But it's simple arithmetic. The current exchange rate is 152 yen to the dollar, so I paid the equivalent of $1.57 for 10 eggs, which would be $1.88 for a dozen. (I buy the cheapest eggs they have. Depending on the brand you could perhaps pay twice as much, but an egg is an egg is an egg.)

I'm going to the supermarket later today. I'm afraid to even enter the aisle where the eggs are, there might be rioting and gangs of egg thieves!

Trump didn't. He would not even know where to start, and even now has no clue what his subordinates are planning or doing. But Project 2025 most certainly did, from years back.
 
Today at Market Basket, the price for the house brand large eggs was still $6.99/dozen. Several name brand eggs were cheaper, and I bought a dozen large for $3.99. I still don't understand how this pricing works. Fortunately, no rioting or egg theft, but some fat guy with a weird hat and mustache said to the manager "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a dozen eggs today."
 
Last Friday our supermarket had notes of apology on the shelves but no eggs at all. Bird flu. The empty shelves had prices listed, the lowest $4.99 for a half dozen of some cage-free brand. The ones we would have normally bought were listed as $6.99 A dozen for the medium size.
 
I can start shipping eggs to people in need lol. I don't think they'll make it in good shape, but you could at least make an omelette.
 
Trump decrees that "The Great Gatsby" needs to be rewritten to NOT include East Egg and West Egg.

Also, rewrite it with fewer, smaller words...perhaps down to just a paragraph or two.
 
As I predicted, not only did Trump not preside over a dramatic reduction in egg prices in January, but the prices actually increased on average to the all-time high of $4.953/dozen. Of course, he was only president for 11 days in that month, but still the trend is going in the wrong direction.

I also believe that the War in Ukraine has exceeded the 48 hour ending that was guaranteed, so maybe we should just assume that whatever Trump guarantees, the opposite will predictably happen? We could start with "MAGA".
