A better understanding of the new "smelling" capabilities of human sperm cells may lead to advances in contraception and fertility treatments. A new study identifies a novel odorant receptor on human sperm and shows how activating this receptor causes the sperm to make a beeline for a target.

Like I've always said about head lice, it's a good thing the little suckers don't have wings.

Is that enough commentary, ya think?

My daughter just got lice... again! Why can't our great scientists invent a better pesticide for head lice!

Anyhow, remember the thing about sperm wars? A scientist said that it appeared that sperm from two different men will "battle" each other. In other words, some of the sperm were designated not to fertilize the egg, but to defend the sperms on their team so to speak. Some other researchers said it was hogwash. Was this ever resolved?

Denise, wrt the head lice, btdt. Wash, wash, wash everything and do NOT rely on the insecticide to persist to take care of the hatchlings. We had to manually remove every nit from my daughter's hair AFTER the treatment. This will be her chance to finally try a short 'do. We combed through with the lice comb and PULLED every egg from the hair it was attached to, by hand. They're really stuck fast, you can't rely on the comb to extract them.

Regarding sperm wars, I thought some were "fertilizers" and others were blockers. Are you saying there are hunter-killer sperms?

Oh, head lice! Yes, I go through her hair every couple days. Almost strand by strand. And, I agree, the lice combs don't work. She has dark blonde hair and it's so hard to see them because the lice are about the same color. I pulled at least 8 adult lice out the first day. And, yep, it's hard to find all the nits. I've used Rid and it does not work. They were all alive after her treatment. Last time she had it I put one in a plastic bag so she could look at it under her scope. It lived until the next day. Last time I bought this stinky oil mixture from a store called Garden of Eden. I saturated her hair with is and made her sleep with a shower cap on. It still took a month until she was completely lice free. Not doing that this time, just checking her hair every couple days and taking any bug that has hatched from a missed nit out.

Anyhow! There was a researcher a few years ago who claimed that there are so to speak fighter sperm that will fight the sperm of another man. In other words, if a woman has sex with two men within a certain time period, not only will the sperm try to fertilize the egg, but a segment of the sperm population will battle each other to give their team the advantage. Don't know what came of that.

As an experienced louse fighter, I can testify to the fact that the little critters are developing increased resistance to the pyrethrins used in most lice remedies. They will kill the adults (they just don't die right away) but not the nits, whatever the label says. You can get prescription formulas that will work, but they are also pyrethrin based, just more potent. The secret to it is in retreatment in sync with the nit incubation cycle.

I haven't read it, but this I think is the book:

Robin Baker and Mark A.Bellis
Human Sperm Competition – Copulation,
masturbation and infidelity

I think I will refer to my horny friends as “egg sniffing sperm cells”

Lice!!!! My step daughter’s father (sperm donor) was a Saudi, so she has thick thick dark hair and for a while she seemed to get lice at least once a year; I would have to soak her hair in the treatment and then comb through it while it was still wet, only then would we get the buggies under control.
