Earth stops spinning, we fly into space?

Yes, I did see that. And it made me grimace in annoyance.
I stopped watching four minutes into the video. That wasn't the only grimace in it. "Our guy" also kept saying "inerrancies" when he meant to say "errors", and it just seemed like he wasn't who I wanted representing me on Huntington Pier.

I don't think anything can stop spinning outside of absolute zero so death would come long before the world stopped.

Wow guys, that was a bunch of awesome replies

I'll bet you could bring the whole project in for less than it cost to kill all the firstborn children...

This had me snorting laughter...well done sir, well done.

Ok, so we know that gravity of the earth isn't affected per se by the rotation. Well except the centrifugal forces.

So, would there be a significant difference in weight in general with the lack or centrifugal force? Does the earth spinning makes us actually lighter then we really are?

The acceleration due to the rotation of the earth makes you at the equator about .34 percent lighter. Less than .7 lb for a 200 lb guy/gal.

So if you step the next morning on your bathroom scale and see you have gained a lb maybe it's because earth rotation has stopped during the night!:D

No, you got it all messed up.

The bible says that the sun and moon stood still in the sky. This is not possible for lots of reasons.

Where do I begin? The Earth would not only have to stop but the moon would have to stop. ANd both would have to get going again. Biblical fundamentalist say that a comet slammed into earth and that slowed us down long enough have the effect. But another one (comet) would have to get us going again. That is wrong for many reasons. All life would be wiped out. For one thing, anything on the surface at the earth at the equator would keep moving even though the earth stopped so everything there would go supersonic. And what would stop the moon from falling to the earth? I cannot understand why any intelligent person could believe this story.

But disbelieving this story does not require disbelief in God. No mainstream Christianity believes the bible is literally true.

Well, no. If the earth stopped turning in the night, there would be no 'next morning', ever.

(Or at least for some months or perhaps some tens of millions of years, depending on whether the earth has stopped rotating so that it always presents the same side to the sun, or so that it no longer rotates with reference to the rest of our galaxy, or with reference to the whole universe.

The discovery channel

Discovery Channel recently did an hour long show on the effects of the earths rotation gradually slowing then stopping.

I have no idea why it was slowing in this scenario or why they felt it would make an interesting show.

Guess they needed another "oh ****, look what would happen if it was the end of the world" program, because, obviously - there isn't enough of them.
