Another opportunity to see reactions from the...er...gun hobbyists, when their toy of choice is used to kill a bunch of people.

“I don’t look at the gun as the problem,” said the 46-year-old man, who gave his name as Scott. “I look at the individual. He pulled the trigger. The gun didn’t jump up and start shooting people.

“That’s on him.”

Right.
Which is scarier...Dylann Roof with an icepick?
Dylann Roof with a kitchen knife?
Or Dylann Roof with a gun?

As long as we have Dylann Roofs walking around (and we will), why make it easier for them to kill people?

A store worker exploded Tuesday when asked about Roof’s reported purchase just two months ago, and called the police to chase the media away.

“Get off my property right now,” he ordered reporters at the business. “We don’t give information out like that. I don’t know anything about it. Just go!”

That seems like a pretty extreme reaction. I can understand it, though. I mean, if I sold a gun to somebody who used it to kill 9 people, it would weigh heavily on my conscience. If only we could detect these "mentally ill" folks before they go on a killing rampage!

Surprised the NRA hasn't come out with the violent video games excuse yet.

A waiting period might have sufficed.

Roof purchased the gun in April. It was more than a month before he murdered those people. How long a wait period do you think would have worked? Even if it had been, say, a 3 month waiting period, why should we believe he wouldn't have just waited, rather than giving up on his plan?

And lastly, why do you want poor women under threat of domestic violence to be unable to defend themselves? Because that's what a waiting period does: it renders them defenseless.

As a non-USian, so I have no dog in this scrap, I see no way forward in a gun ban.

Only law abiding citizens might surrender their weapons. Only criminals will decline to do so. America has painted itself into this corner.

It is all very well to point out that such gun-lovery is not needed throughout the rest of the civilised world. Merka has driven itself into an imagined siege mentality invented out of whole cloth.

...
And lastly, why do you want poor women under threat of domestic violence to be unable to defend themselves?...

Because if we kill off all the poor women, only the wealthy will remain. And a wealthy society is generally a less violent society. :);)

A year would have sufficed I think. Crazy killers like mr. Roof tend to be impulsive. I don't know if in this particular case it would have stopped him, but I definitely time it would have certainly increased the odds.

Your second comment is pretty ridiculous, I'll just leave it at that.

Why don't you just admit, someone who is hell bent on doing this,is going to do it, it is up to the individual to protect themselves. No law you could add is going to stop these things but I can stop it happening to me, which is why I carry a firearm.

Only ridiculous because you refuse to THINK about it in an intelligent way.

... until the impulse struck again.

I'm impulsive, but I'm also a slow burner. I spent over twelve years thinking about my dream car. Even after my credit and my income were both sufficient to afford the purchase, I still spent a few more years dreaming about it. Then one day, on an impulse, I went down to the dealership and bought it.

It's a reassuring assumption, but I don't believe for a moment that Roof's urge was something that would pass in a month, or a year, or ever. Ban guns, and I bet he would have turned to arson.

A waiting list could stop a maniac from getting a gun and killing people. Not everyone, but a lot of them. You can be hell bent on doing something and not have the resources, nor the patience to put up with a waiting list. You are a responsible gun owner it seems. Congrats, you haven't murdered anyone. The problem is not everyone should have a gun. Are you against background checks too? Do you think there is no reasonable law that could have prevented this crazy guy to buy a gun but allow a responsible gun owner like yourself to get one?

No,your comment was just plain ridiculous and unproductive. You want every person, crazy or not, to have the right to own a gun, presumably. Based on your reasoning, I could take your stance on gun control and say you want to kill black people in a church because you don't support gun regulation.

Love it. Congrats
So you're saying I should quit thinking about it and just do it. :)

Yes, why is that so hard to accept?

And that right there highlights the problem.

It just come so naturally for Americans to jump to the conclusion that any problem can be solved by shooting someone.

It's stances like these that make me optimistic we will one day have reasonable gun regulation. Fanatical arguments like yours make it more likely you will just be left out of the debate.

We've been over this before. The statistics show that owning a gun doesn't help protect women from domestic violence. In fact, owning a gun makes a woman more likely to be shot in a domestic violence situation.

Guns don't kill people... they just make killing people a helluva lot easier.

It's only a matter of time before liberals try to outlaw karate.

I am not sure what a waiting period is supposed to achieve with regard to guns. However, I can't see any reason why mandatory background checks and licensing/permits cannot be implemented. It may not solve the problem entirely, but it may, in some way limit the crazies from gaining access to guns.

But, I am not American. So what do I know?
