DVD writing software

Further to Ian's DVD traumas and Patricio's comment re buggy software, what is the best product? My version of Nero won't copy to DVD, nor will Windows (although I think that's my fault for messing around with it), but two other programs work fine.

Any top tips from the ubernerds?

Nero is fine by me, I went out and paid for the full version over the internet. It's cheaper than buying the boxed product, and you get the whole lot for a very reasonable price.

The issue with copying DVDs is that they are usually copy protected, which Nero and other people won't break, unless they want to be sued.

There are products out there that will do that step, if you feel that it is your legal right to do so, such as DVD Decrypter.

Thanks. Looks like Nero is the one I need. The version I have is legit, but came packaged with another drive so that could be the problem. I'd managed to copy DVDs with no difficulty, but when trying to back up data, no disc is detected in the drive. Puzzling.

It could be you have the wrong format of DVD to write to? I didn't know there was a difference between DVD+R and DVD-R, so I bought a stack that I can't even use.

Hmmm. Could be something like that although the drive reads & writes to both + & - discs with some programs but not with others. I'll see if the latest version of Nero works.

If all else fails, I'll try a full reinstall; at least that'll get rid of all the gay porn I've been sent by Interesting Ian. :D

Just coughed for the latest version of Nero which has solved the problem. An impressive package!

The downside is that my pc only just meets the required specs...which means...I get to persuade the wife that I need a new one. :)

The (free) bootable CD that is Knoppix has an excellent DVD /CD copier

Ummm, isn't KNOPPIX for Linux only? I don't really want to go through the headache of installing and learning a new OS. What I want is easy to use software that works; Nero fits the bill.

No, it's a bootable CD which (after setting your BIOS obviously) will run a complete OS from the CD it doesn't write to your hard drive.
You can find files on your hard drive if 98, 2000 XP or whatever has thrown its hand in, burn stuff on to CD or DVD, Access the internet, write letters etc...it even has a rather good version of 'Asteroids'...all for free, everyone should keep a copy handy...IMHO

K3B is probably the name of the burning software you are thinking of from Knoppix. It is a fine frontend to the commandline DVD and CD burning tools in Linux. It's functionality is similar to Nero, and I personally recommend it. To linux users.

Knoppix is good stuff, too -- I do recommend you download a copy and burn it .... ... ... hrm, chicken and egg problem here, I guess!

You were talking about burning data, not copying a DVD, right?

'tis indeed K3B...
AC was probably wanting to burn data...I was talking about Knoppixs' capability to perform both operations.

I switched from Compaq 750mhz to Dell 1 Ghz system, and now I can't get either Knoppix or Ubuntu live CDs to boot properly.

Both CDs come up with mode errors, and ask me to select the video mode I wish to use. Then, the boot process stops, and I'm warned that the filesystem can't be found. (or something to that effect). On my old system, Knoppix just booted right up, allowed me to surf the net, etc. etc.

I'm thinking it's probably either something in the BIOS that I'm overlooking, or something to do with the CD-ROM player itself, but it sure is annoying.

I had a similar experience with a bootable CD for Partition Magic. The boot CD would not work, then I checked the jumpers for the CD drive. It was the only drive on the cable, but was jumpered as the slave. It would work fine with the OS, but it would not work as a boot drive till I jumpered it to be the primary drive on the cable, not the slave.

Yep, I was having trouble copying data. I got confused because DVD decrypter seemed to use my old version of Nero to write to the dvd drive, but all attempts to copy data failed. It does state on the original Nero disc that it will only work with the drive it came bundled with (which is not the dvd drive), so I suppose the decrypter program is clever enough to get around this.

I downloaded a copy of Knoppix just out of interest, but my machine refuses to boot from it, even though the bios is set to boot from discs if available rather than the hard drive. It doesn't seem to be AUP's jumper problem; it won't play nice on a master or slave drive.

The download came as an ISO image, is this why it won't work? I tried using Nero to burn a bootable disc, but that didn't work either. Help! I'd be really interested to try Knoppix; it sounds a valuable tool.

As an image, I think. I'll try again & see what happens. That's probably it. Thanks.

If it doesn't work...you can buy a copy on Ebay for about £0.99

Sigh. I managed to get a kind of bootable disc, but it won't boot up as far as a GUI, which the knoppix guide says it should. All I get is a weird DOS prompt.

Oh well, it's been more fun than replacing windows (real ones), which is what I should have spent the weekend doing. :)
