Dr Oz Jumps the Shark -- Long Island Rare

JIt doesn't matter how much money would come flowing into our pockets, we'd take the ethical high road, wouldn't we? Even if it meant we'd be foregoing enormous profits, nobody could convince US to compromise our integrity!! Right?

Irrelevant. The simple fact is that he has compromised his integrity. Whether someone else might do the same if put in a similar situation has nothing to do with it. Let's drop the Godwin here - a large part of the Nazis' success was due to the German people being willing to spy on and inform on their neighbours. These were just ordinary people going about ordinary lives, yet a huge number of them were complicit in horrific crimes and genocide. Would we do the same if put in the same situation? I like to think I wouldn't and no doubt most people are the same. But let's not kid ourselves, we're no different from those ordinary German people, and the majority absolutely would do the same as they did.

But that doesn't make it any better. What they did was still wrong, and it's perfectly acceptable for us point out exactly was wrong and why it was wrong. That we might not be any better if put in the same situation does not make such criticisms any less valid. Oz may not be quite at the level of murdering millions of people based solely on their ethnicity, but the principle is exactly the same. What he does is wrong, and what he does is very much his own choice. That other people might make the same choice in the same situation does not make it any less wrong.

Of course, as Lucian notes it seems that his questionable ethics and beliefs may have rather less to do with TV than you are claiming anyway. He practices woo, he's married to a woo, and he's involved in some very questionable marketing practice. Spouting woo on TV hardly seems like a big step from there.

No, quite relevant.

The issue is not Nazis, nor is there any sort of "everyone does it" defense. The issue is credibility.

I maintain that money affects credibility. When television pays Dr. Oz to put out a message day after day, week after week, the enormous sum of money affects his credibility, and affects it adversely.

There is a funny thing about human beings. We're hypocrites. (And, hypocritically, we're hypocrites in spite of our belief that hypocrisy is a bad thing.) We don't think our own integrity can be compromised by large sums of money. We do, however, recognize that the integrity of others CAN be so compromised.

Chances are that Dr. Oz convinced himself that he was not going to doing anything bad on his program, that he was actually going to be doing nothing but good, and that his standards would be elevated rather than lowered. But the demands from television, and its accompanying river of cash, have done the opposite; they have adversely affected his ethical and medical judgment, as well as the care with which he deals with medical issues. We have pointed out many examples of adverse effect.

And I further maintain that, not only has it adversely affected Dr. Oz, it would adversely affect most people in a similar situation, so a "holier than thou" attitude is probably not justified or wise.

First you'd have to show he had any integrity to be compromised.

Aside from his promotion of potentially dangerous woo on television, Oz practices trancendental meditation, is an admirer of Emanuel Swedenborg, Director of the Complementary Medicine Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital and

Link

His wife/collaborator is a reiki master. I don't think TV is entirely to blame for his faults as a peddler of medical woo.

Whenever I hear the term reiki master, my right hand makes a reflexive stroking motion. Oddest thing.

Theresa Caputo was on Dr Oz AGAIN today. His message was that talking to your dead loved ones can ease anxiety. He interviewed someone who had a "life changing" reading with Theresa.

I am very certain that the woman in the audience was hot read. Dr. Oz is terrible for putting her on! TERRIBLE!

Just because Dr. precedes your name doesn't mean you ain't a douche.

South Park might have been wrong.

He was trying to make it seem medical by asking the person after they were cold (or hot) read if they felt better now. Did you lose some anxiety?

I'm fairly positive audience member number one was a hot read or an actress.

I supect he's humping the shark at this point........

All this says is that, not only is he a credulous cretin, he can't manage.

Hire the right people. Trust them. And things will look after themselves.

For the greatest part, it's a sausage factory, Gord. There're all these outlets that need content, content, content, 24/7 (or at least when it isn't more profitable to run infomercials, that is).

The viewing public demands to be entertained and entertain we will whether it's with fact or fancy

Such is the nature of that which has kept me off the streets for 3 decades

I think Dr. Oz's background as a heart surgeon has led him to rely on testimonials as solid evidence that something works or is real. Heart surgery is that rare practice where testimonials are actually a strong indicator of efficacy...if you are able to give testimony about it, then you must have survived the surgery.

If you employ a talking-to-the-dead type medium, you can get testimonials from the non-survivors too.

Ah, yes. The "departed, hypothesized co-investigators" of Gary Schwartz's The Afterlife Experiments fame.
