Dowsing by a Skeptic

Because it's real dowsing for a valuable resource. Tests are petty at best.

So now it is the opposite of what you first said: dowsing only works when it is important, not in " petty" tests. Do you think you are strengthening your position here?

Ah yes, the same link as the previous one.
The video however does not contain a meaningful result for dowsing at all.

"... Satellite imaging, high tech radar, and we (hav) actually had an old fashioned water witch come out".

The water witch says he is a water dowser and a christian, not a witch. Then the video suggests that the water dowser found the water by completely ignoring the other methods.

No meaningful result is right.

Do you understand the problem of confirmation bias? What kinds of records have you gathered, indicating just how often a "dowser" making such a guarantee does not, in fact, get to charge a fee?

As I think I have pointed out I am VERYnew to dowsing, but I have no doubt that dowsers with a proven track record can make a very good living. Take this bloke for example..... http://www.jackcoelwaterdowsing.com/

Isn't t that a test?

If dowsing doesn't work for "petty" tests, but does pay a fee for success, why didn't a million dollars "fee" for a successful test make it non-petty?

And why was finding a coin in your wife's hand not a petty test? Or finding a painted bucket not a petty test? Our perhaps it is the double blinding and truly hidden object that were the real causes of your problem?

For reasons I have explained elsewhere on the forum, I do not often participate in argumentum ad video.

What happens on the video that, in your opinion, constitutes a "meaningful" result?

What, in your opinion, is "meaningful" about it?

Did you read the paper I linked about the ideomotor effect?

As I think I have pointed out I am very new to dowsing...

Yeah, for some reason I don't buy this at all.

You remind me of some of those Christian college students who are given an assignment to make a certain number of posts in a skeptics' or atheists' forum.

Quite amusing, really.

Please let me know when the ideomotor effect is no longer just a theory.

You didn't even know about the ideomotor phenomenon (not "theory") when you started this thread. Please stop pretending you know much of anything about it.

I am new to dowsing and am learning as I go. Naturally I change my ideas as I learn, and no doubt will be changing even more as my knowledge increases :)

I wonder if you understand confirmation bias, at all.

I ask again: how often do you suppose such a "dowser" does not get to collect a fee, becuase the hole is dry?

In the case of dowsing for water, I would have to say water:)

The water !

D

Yes I took a look. Please let me know when the ideomotor effect is no longer just a theory.

Didn't read the paper, eh? Check out the conclusions section.

Again I ask: what do you, personally, think the "ideomotor effect" is? What would you, personally, consider "proof" of the effect?

As for your video: are you claiming that it demonstrates a "dowser" finding water without recourse to any other method? Finding water where other methods indicated there was none? Finding water in an area that had not previously been the subject of a public-record hydrological analysis?

I am surprised that you did not know this. Many houses have "pipes" with "faucets" (sometimes called "taps") from which can be induced to flow, not only potable water, but water of different temperatures! Some people are able to find water in some houses, using no more equipment than the metal "taps", with a success rate far exceeding that predicted by random chance.
