Dowsing by a Skeptic

If I do it from lets say 50 yards away it should help rule out the possibility of visual clues. I think it would make it easier for me to dowse the whole lot at once rather than one at a time.
I don't understand. How can you locate the object you're dowsing for from that distance, or by dowsing the whole lot at once?

Just make sure there are no visual clues by using rigid opaque covers or containers, dowse each one individually by standing or walking over it with your rods, and make a note of which if any you get a response for. Then remove/open the container and see if you're right. Repeat several times to see if you're right more often than would be expected by chance (the expected chance result is one right guess in six experiments). If you get the right one say four times out of six you'll have a result which justifies going on to the next step of repeating the experiment in front of witnesses.

Figured out what ?
The exact sequence of wing movements bumblebees make when they fly.

That's a good plan.

I'm pleased to see your adventurous spirit and creativity on display. I remember when I was first wooed by science - it was all curiosity and discovery, with regular doses of amazement. Quite wonderful. Now, however, there's this trend toward regimentation and lock-steppery I find disturbing. Real out-of-the-box thinking like yours isn't as admired as it should be.

Goest thou and dowse my friend. Dowse for your own pleasure, and fie on all the naysayers and linear thinkers. Don't let small minds grind you into the dust of despair. Dowse away, and God bless you sir!
You've clearly decided he's pulling our chains and I'm now leaning that way myself, but I will continue to give him the benefit of the doubt a little longer.

Thanks very much :)

SaskMick,

Are you interested in the Million Dollar Challenge or any of the other big money prizes available for proving that you can successfully dowse under properly controlled conditions?

I will stand at a distance and ask where the can of coke is. I will go where the rods show me to go. The containers will be widely spaced so there will be no doubt.
OK, whatever you think works best for you.

Why would that be important ?
It's not important, it's interesting. At least to scientists, who do almost everything they do "for the pleasure of finding things out", as Richard Feynman famously put it.

Not at the moment. But if I won it I would give it away. Makes for good karma.

Yeah, right.

Why not, I don't need it. I have a brand new house coming on the ninth of July, going on a brand new basement. It's costing me absolutely nothing and it's on a place that I own outright. I would not know what to do with a million.

Who cares about this?

Because there is no possible mechanism by which it can work, even hypothetically. The only force by which it could operate is the electromagnetic force, and there is no mechanism to produce the effect, no mechanism to detect it, and no effect.

And even if there were a mechanism to allow dowsing to function as advertised, it would be able to be detected and measured using other means than dowsing.

(much snipped)
You should try dowsing yourself, it costs nothing to find out if you can do it. If you can I guarantee you will be hooked.

Yeah, but that's the part that scares me off. I've got my life pretty stable and comfortable now, so I'm wary about new things generally and something like this has the potential to be a huge change. I still enjoy reading about others doing it, I'm just not cut out for anything so adventurous myself.

So keep the experiments going and where possible, a video or two.

What makes you think nobody here has tried it? I did, as did everyone I could get to give it a try. Nobody was hooked as it blatantly never worked for anyone.

I don't blame you if you are settled and happy.

I love new things, and will try almost anything once. I used to think dowsing was just about finding water, but it's far more than that. I will keep experimenting.

That's because they all had conditioned brains.

Young children take to dowsing like a duck to water, it's because their minds have not been conditioned by society. They have no preconceptions of what they can not do so they just do it.
