Dowsing by a Skeptic

All that mattered to me was that neither myself or my wife knew which bucket was marked
As has been pointed out, it's possible that the marked bucket had some other distinguishing feature that you were picking up on subconsciously. This protocol would consequently not be acceptable in a formal test, eg for the JREF million dollar challenge. It should not be adequate evidence to you either.

Please do not let your rods start dictating to you what you are or are not "allowed" to do with them. That way lies madness.

Just remember: one perfect experiment is worth many, many, many imperfect experiments.

SaskMick, you've mentioned before about intuition and not wanting to use dowsing on petty matters (or receive money for it) as well as asking questions of your rods and, though I don't think you've said so specifically, this implies to me that the rods (or whatever the source is) have some measure of free will in co-operating. If you try to get a result and it doesn't work, or you get the wrong result, is there any way to tell a failure apart from "the rods don't want to cooperate"?

Daylightstar, I think in that case he's referring to his wife (if she doesn't move the buckets, he'll know where he put the painted one).

So far, this thread has been dominated by preposterous, unsupported claims.

Can someone PM me when we get to the part where SaskMick is rubbing noses in PROOF and such stuff?

TIA

Yep.

If I ask is this a good time and I get a negative response and still go ahead, I would expect a complete failure.

I once did a simple test with my wife holding a coin in a clenched fist with her arms held apart, I got the correct hand continuously. The next morning we tried it again after being given a no to the shall I do it again question. I got a positive from both clenched fists.:)

PS, If it's the real deal I am certain I will get the go ahead every time, but it's as if I am being told the tests are kind of pointless when I already know I can do it. And it's a valid point.

No doubt the above will not make the members here very happy, but then what would ? Next thing they will be asking me to check the inside of the bucket to make sure I got the right one !

Said test is useless.

No it isn't. You will only know you can do it when you do consistently better than chance using a sensible test protocol. You have not yet even tried a sensible test protocol.

Consistently better than chance results obtained using a sensible test protocol.

I'm going to assume this is a joke.

You are not real good with instructions are you? Saskmick, why not just put a coin in one of your hands and close your eyes and guess which hand it's in? Or put a pitcher of water on the dining room table and see if you can find it in the dark!

Makes me miss Edge.;)

All tautologies are tautologically tautological. Please keep up.

Can you dowse or not?

I'm betting No. If you offer one lame excuse, I'll change that to Hell No.

Of course I can't dowse, nobody can ! That's a proven fact right ?:D:D

All tests are useless when you know what the result will be.
That's why we double blind them. So that during the test itself nobody knows whether a given response supports or denies the hypothesis.

eta: or at least blind them

Not at all. I've been surprised many times when I thought I knew what the answer would be, only to find that the truth was different. In fact, a good test is particularly valuable when you think you know the answer. The trick is to make certain that what you think you know cannot influence the results of the actual test.

If I see a door which a no entry sign on it, that will be the door through which I will enter every time:D

Sounds clever and rebellious, but in truth it is not such a great idea. The door may not open from that side, or you may run into someone going the right way. Or set off an alarm.
