It's simply the result of thousands of years of memetic/cultural selection. All things being equal, the beliefs which tried to spread and perpetuate themselves survived, beliefs that did not tended to die out. Now of course a lot of people will not convert when confronted with a preacher, many may even feel revulted, but they will always bump into at least that one person who is seeking guidance and will believe: and then perpetuate the belief his or her self keeping it alive.
