Like all cetaceans, dolphins are descended from land based quadrupeds which adapted back to a marine lifestyle.
Can they grow legs? I suspect if you (or some environmental mutagen) messed with their HOX genes, the answer is "yes"
I doubt they'll be climbing trees anytime soon, though.
TOKYO — Japanese researchers said Sunday that a bottlenose dolphin captured last month has an extra set of fins that could be the remains of back legs, a discovery that may provide further evidence that ocean-dwelling mammals once lived on land.
The scientists all agreed that the legs were delicious, and provided a welcome addition to the KFD menu.
